Working on the final, and most important, stage of this large order of mugs: glazing the design.
They’re called the Swing Mugs because the pattern moves like jazz, flowing, shifting, never quite the same twice. Always bouncing back onto its feet, following a rhythm entirely of its own.
“Umami” is the word that comes to mind when I look at this footage of @muddythings in her flow state! I wasn’t going to post until I finish the project, but in the off chance someone wants to hire me to meander around with this camera I figured I should send it into the ether! A little color grading and an intimate snippet of this dreamy Super 8 footage @kodak_shootfilm 🎞️ still so thankful to @mononoawarefilm@tape_losangeles for putting a bolex in my hands a few years ago. Now if only I could find the Kodak film 🧈 pot of gold at the end of a rainbow 🌈
I shared in a previous post how challenging it can be to glaze my mugs because of their slanted bases—they’re not the easiest pieces to hold and dip.
Luckily, a talented fellow potter at the studio made me a custom contraption to help hold the mugs while glazing. And honestly… it works so well. It’s already saving me a lot of time during production.
Thanks, Mark! I really appreciate the tool and your help.

Two weekends ago was such a great creative moment in time for San Pedro. All the studios were open and the artists showing their art.

🎞️📽️ At home with the sweetest person and super talented artist, Mayon Hanania @mayonscrayons@muddythings amongst her creations and familiars 🐈⬛🐈⬛ who immediately said yes when I asked to come test a super 8 camera in her home. We hope to make more films together telling the story of her life and inspirations! Portrait of an artist: my favorite subject ♾️

I made a cup one day with a shape I’d rarely done before, and now I have to repeat it 250 times. This big order is shaping up nicely, but how on earth did I not think about the glazing process being such a tricky part?
How do you even hold a slightly slanted base just right to glaze only the top? I do have to try a tool someone made for me—but for now, I’m holding on for dear life every time I dip a cup. Sometimes they even drop into the bucket by accident (last pic).
Still, I’m really happy to challenge myself—and even more excited to share the final project with everyone this summer.
