Checking on hedge sapplings, climbing ancient oaks, greeting new piggies, foraging for greens, sorting pond plants, setting up camera traps, surveying pollinators, meeting bugs. Never a dull moment with @youngwilders_ I'm always so late posting these, oops! We'll see how everything has shifted while we hedgerow survey next week 🌱

What does it look like when 15 Youngwilders come together to create new pond and wetland habitats? …. 👀 At the end of April, Youngwilders got our feet incredibly muddy at @grange.project , and worked with local legends Olly and Benn to dig two new ponds across the site. This included fighting our oldest and fiercest nemesis - the victorian clay land drain! With one major drain now blocked (🤞) and the ponds dug, all we needed was some plants to kickstart these new habitats! Legends from across south wales and the west country came together to plant these newly created habitats with native wetland species, give them a little water, and learn a bit about aquatic vegetation in the process. Now we just need to keep dancing for that rain to fill our ponds up 🐸 Shout out to @wildlifewarrioraidan for the incredible lunchtime workshop on art and wellbeing, and to @muccycloud for their infinite wisdom and incredible icebreaker. And thanks to @jonathontitmus for the incredible video !! 🔥

Also if you have a drill and 8mm drill bit you could bring along please do (and let me know you're doing so) This project is supported by @GrowWildUK , the national outreach programme of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew’

Did you know there's a whole host of plants that were grown commonly in Medeival times that most people have never heard of today?  This month for Queer Community Gardening we're going to start planting seeds for the new Medieval Kitchen garden, and make some signage (illuminated manuscript inspired). We'll be planting orach, skirret, black salsify and maybe some good king henry (open to other ideas!). While also talking about what these plants are and why they're not grown commonly today (hint, they're hard to commercialise) so come along! 16th May, 11am-1pm. No prior experience needed, and no need to book. -- A wyddoch chi fod yna lu o blanhigion oedd yn cael eu tyfu'n gyffredin yn yr Oesoedd Canol nad yw'r rhan fwyaf o bobl erioed wedi clywed amdanyn nhw heddiw?   Y mis hwn yn Garddio Cymunedol Cwiar rydym yn dechrau plannu hadau ar gyfer yr ardd Gegin Ganoloesol newydd, a chreu arwyddion (wedi'i hysbrydoli gan lawysgrif oleuedig). Fe fyddwn ni'n plannu llygwyn yr ardd, sgired, barf yr afr du ac efallai peth ‘Brenin Henry da’ (agored i syniadau arall!). Byddwn yn siarad hefyd am beth yw'r planhigion hyn a pham nad ydyn nhw'n cael eu tyfu'n gyffredinol heddiw (falle achos maen nhw'n anodd eu masnacheiddio) Felly dewch draw! 16eg o Fai, 11yb-1yp. Nid oes angen profiad blaenorol, a dim angen archebu lle

Shout out to Ferozah, Tilda, Rhys, Aisha, Aidan, Izzy, Sarah, Maria, Cecilia, Mia, Bonnie, Theo, Lekshmi and Lyze!! 🌟 Last month, all the Wild Stewards met up in Wild Ennerdale in Cumbria... Once you see that braided river channel with a group of nature nerds, you’ll never be the same again (extreme but maybe true) 🏞️ The Youngwilders team first came to the valley on a rewilding road trip in 2020 and it’s one of the reasons the organisation exists (also extreme but maybe true) so it was amazing to return with the best group of nature nerds all doing such cool stuff 🐛 From a walk looking at natural processes in the landscape and lying by the River Liza, to a talk by Artist and Writer Rob St John on the use of sound to engage people with rewilding projects, it was a very energising few days 🧠 A huge thank you to the #NationalLottery players for making this weekend possible! @tnlcommunityfund

Thank you to everyone who came on our first nature walk and draw! We focused on edible plants, made some beautiful drawings, experimented with some flower bashing, and got very lucky with the beautiful weather.  Our next walk and draw is on the 30th May where we'll be looking at Trees! Drawing and bark rubbing. Head to @ardour.academy website to book your ticket. And theres a community gardening session every Tuesday evening 6.15-7.15 at Cathay's community centre, no need to book that just turn up!

The second installation of Queer Community Gardening on Saturday was a wonderful time! We talked about edible wild plants and made some (delicious and nut free) wild garlic pesto.  Thanks to everybody that came along! I was nattering and munching too much to take very many photos.  The next session will be on 16th May, 11-1 and we'll be planting seeds and making signage for our medieval kitchen garden inspired bed! As well as learning about the plants we're planting and why they've stopped being grown (hint, they're hard to mass produce and commercialise). More info on that shortly.

(f)unemployment or the "attempting to freelance because I haven't got a day job again yet" era... (f)underemployment doesn't have quite the same ring to it! Despite the fact I'm not enjoying how actually the stress of being unemployed (or more realistically being employed a bit) I have been doing some nice things since my job contract ended and am extremely grateful to be absolutely loving the work I do have just a bit more please (if anyone has any leads hmu!) I've visited the oldest oak in Wales, made a flower crown I'm definitely allergic to, learned to weave an coracle, picked lots of three cornered leek, had my hair transformed by a talented pal, drawn lots of fish and frogs and mushrooms, and had a lovely damp camping trip among other thing. Plus my chest is now 3 months old and I feel like 70% back to my normal self health wise which is lovelyyy.

For our April addition of Queer Community Gardening Izzy will be bringing in foraged wild plants which we’ll learn to ID. Then we’ll then be making to make a vegan wild garlic pesto to eat with some bread and hot drinks. If you're planning on coming along please let us know if you have any kind of nut (or other) allergy and we'll adjust our recipe accordingly. No need to book, just come along. We'll be in the polytunnel if the weather is wet. -- Ar gyfer ein sesiwn Arddio Cymunedol Cwiar ym mis Ebrill, bydd Izzy yn dod â phlanhigion gwyllt wedi'u fforio i mewn a byddwn yn dysgu sut i'w hadnabod. Wedyn byddwn ni’n gwneud pesto garlleg gwyllt fegan i’w fwyta gyda bara a diodydd poeth. Os ydych yn bwriadu dod, rhowch wybod i ni os oes gennych unrhyw fath o alergedd i gnau (neu arall) a byddwn yn addasu ein rysáit yn unol â hynny. Does dim angen archebu lle, jyst dewch draw. Os bydd y tywydd yn wlyb, byddwn yn y polytunnel.
