#NOWNESSASIAPicks NEW: Marcin T. Jozefiak’s ‘Fearless Flowers: Beneath the Uniform’ is a stylised documentary exploring the tension between rapid modernisation and the expectations placed on bodies, gender, and identity. “South Korea is often viewed through the lens of acceleration—technology, pop culture, aesthetics, and global visibility,” Jozefiak explains. Beneath the polished image, however, conservative beliefs and rigid, often outdated standards persist. Following his move to South Korea, the filmmaker became interested in these contradictory social realities and how people resist societal norms. 🌹
The film began as a photo series featuring individuals keen to share about their bodies, sexuality, and the image imposed on them by society. Jozefiak removed participants from the humdrum of everyday life and placed them in a neutral studio, slowing down the conventional gaze, softening it, and returning it to the subjects.
The project then progressed into a moving image series, which Jozefiak shot on Super 8. It was a “ritual” of preparation, conversation, and pause, he said.
