The creator behind the viral meme account that pairs famous artwork with sports photography, @artbutmakeitsports , is stopping at @artsmia for his book tour on May 17. Writer @stephenhero chatted with LJ Rader, the thirtysomething New Yorker behind the account, on how he’s established himself as a unique intersectional expert. Picture this: You and your family load up the SUV and drive to the North Shore. Or the lakeside towns of Otter Tail County. Or the mountain bike trails near Cuyuna. From the back seat, a tiny head looks up from an iPad and shouts, “Look at that!” Suddenly, a giant statue of a prairie chicken looms so large it practically blocks your path. Or maybe it’s a voyageur or a Viking. Or you went so far north you found Smokey Bear? Let us inspire you with the myths, legends, and roadside statues that define Minnesota, all the while making memories and discovering even more to love and appreciate right here at home! Head to the link in our bio to get started. 🚗💨 ✍️ @madison.bloomquist 📷 @caitabrams Illustrations by @iverillo

The truth is that @bauhausbrewlabs told us three months ago just how hard things have gotten for craft breweries. After 12 years as an immovable cornerstone of the Minneapolis craft beer scene and Northeast Minneapolis, the brewery made a vulnerable post on Instagram detailing how Operation Metro Surge had created a “perfect storm” for business: Taproom, liquor store, and restaurant sales had all taken a massive blow as DHS wreaked havoc in our community; as workers across the hospitality industry navigated the daily trials of keeping themselves and their coworkers safe; and all of this, of course, during winter, the hardest season for breweries. Today, the brewery announced that after a few months of fighting tooth-and-nail to stay open, it will close permanently this summer. A goodbye party is planned for June 26-28. It’s time again for Public Art St. Paul’s Sidewalk Poetry Contest! Started in 2008 by artist Marcus Young, the tradition takes place every other year and opens doors for poets to leave their poetry in the sidewalks of St. Paul. Hundreds of poets have submitted their work and 80 poems have been stamped 1,300 times at random sites where city repairs are taking place. This year’s contest is a collaboration with the Capitol Region Watershed District on the theme of water. Taking inspiration from the Watershed District We Are Water exhibit, participants of all ages are asked to explore motifs, feelings, and symbolism surrounding water. Submissions close on June 3. The latest exhibition at the @walkerartcenter , All Day All Night, surveys the last 15 years of artist @chrisunkim , who is deaf. The show challenges cultural assumptions about the value of spoken communication over signed language and reworks the meaning of sound and language through her vast artistic mediums that include drawings, videos, and participatory pieces. The work showcases Kim’s many experiments with sound waves through audio equipment, ink, and canvas, and rewriting a whole new definition of sound, as well as infographics and pie charts. 🎥 Isabelle Curry

How, exactly, will @indeedbrewing ’s patio space get bigger? Right now it’s sandwiched between the Minnesota Commercial Railway tracks to its east and its taproom in the historic Solar Arts Building to its west, but there is a bit of no man’s land between the sidewalk and the border of the patio, where a handful of cars are typically parked any other time of the year. That’s the real estate that Indeed—which just signed a long-term lease at its current location—is using to reimagine its beer yard.    The project is happening in two phases (and don’t worry, the majority of the beer garden will remain open throughout). “The goal is to create an outdoor space that’s curated and multi-experiential in a way that feels real and honest,” says Indeed COO Ryan Bandy. “When Renee Good was shot by an ICE officer on Portland Avenue South in January, it shook me,” writes Robyne Robinson. “For 20 years, I lived half a mile away on 35th Street. I was always in that Central neighborhood—eating Korean barbecue at Midtown Global Market on Lake Street, creating community murals with artist Reggie LeFlore at Funky Grits on Chicago Avenue, and, as a TV news reporter, getting chased out of Prince and Mayte’s wedding at Park Avenue United Methodist.” Robinson spoke with artists Luis Fitch, Katayoun Amjadi, and Steve Ozone about creating art and their fractured sense of belonging in the wake of ICE’s surge. The podiatrist-turned-designer @marionparke announced the closure of her local luxury footwear brand after ten years in business. Her comfort-minded heels earned a devoted celebrity following over the years, with stars including Oprah Winfrey, Meryl Streep, Lupita Nyong’o, and Dr. Jill Biden spotted wearing the brand. “I’m so proud of my team and of the many collaborators that supported us over the past ten years. I’m also truly humbled that so many women trusted us and welcomed the brand into their wardrobes. It’s a bittersweet moment, and also time to turn the page,” Parke said in a statement. As part of the wind-down, the brand is offering 25 percent off sitewide. Read the full story at the link in our bio. ✍️ @madeline.rose.nachbar 📷 @caitabrams
