“An ambitious exhibition that highlights the glory of Low Countries artists still ripe for rediscovery, centuries after their first fame.” - @financialtimes
While male contemporaries like Peter Paul Rubens, Anthony van Dyck, Johannes Vermeer, and Rembrandt van Rijn became household names, many talented women artists remained overlooked for centuries. During the long seventeenth century, women and their art were an undeniable part of the flourishing art world in the Low Countries. Yet their names were often pushed to the footnotes of art history.
Now that story is being rewritten by the Museum of Fine Arts Ghent (@mskgent ) and National Museum of Women in the Arts (@womeninthearts ) with 'Unforgettable' at the MSK in Belgium. This major exhibition restores the women artists to their rightfull place.
Discover works by, among others: Judith Leyster, Alida Withoos, Clara Peeters, Johanna Koerten, Rachel Ruysch, Geertruydt Roghman, Anna Maria van Schurman, Maria Faydherbe, Margareta de Heer, Johanna Vergouwen, Josina Margareta Weenix and Maria Sybilla Merian.

On this International Women’s Day, we would like to thank everyone who attended the official opening of ‘Unforgettable’, and everyone who will visit the exhibition in the next 3 months. Because an exhibition can’t exist without its visitors, and the story of these women artists can’t be told without its readers.
Thank you for the overwhelming interest in these more than 40 women artists from the Low Countries - names you may not know yet, but will surely never forget.💪🏼
The last picture shows what it’s all about… 🧡
Many thanks to ambassador Murielle Scherre @lafilledo and @elisabethlucie for helping bring this long-overlooked chapter of art history into the spotlight. And our photographer Martin Corlazzoli for capturing this magical evening.

Last week, the MSK transformed into the ‘Museum of Sleeping Beauties’. 🌙 As part of the arts festival @tumult_fm , 150 lucky guests were invited to sleep inside the museum - though with a full programme, actual sleeping quickly became optional.
This night unfolded as a living dreamscape filled with performances, music, storytelling and intimate encounters between art and audience. ✨ What emerged was more than an overnight stay: it became a shared experience that turned the museum into a space for imagination, connection and collective memory.
Huge thanks to the artists and partners @bibliotheekdekrook , @kuleshov_fm , @ambrsdschppr , @sanderdecuyper , @sieglinde_lindeland , @pip_sound , @galine.music & Tatête and Navel for making this night so extraordinary.
This project was realised by @urgent.fm , the youth collective of the MSK @schoonvolk_mskgent and @mskgent .
Thanks to everyone who joined us during this iconic moment in the history of the MSK. 🧡🧡🧡

Those works you can’t stop looking at because the longer you look, the more details you notice, and the more unreal it feels that someone made them by hand. 🖤
It becomes even more impressive when you know it took about 11 hours to complete just 2.5 by 20 cm of this lace.
Wealthy buyers paid fortunes for lace-sometimes more than for paintings. Lace was big business. Yet since the 19th century, it has been labeled “decorative” rather than “fine” art, with painting and sculpture ranked higher. Our exhibition Unforgettable aims to challenge that hierarchy.

Proof that Anna Boch was not only an excellent painter but also a visionary: she was the first -and only- person to purchase a work by Vincent van Gogh while he was still alive. 👀
This painting demonstrates how deeply Anna Boch was influenced by Impressionism, particularly by Claude Monet. As a member of the Brussels artists’ group Les XX, Boch was closely connected to the avant-garde, both as a painter and as a collector. She came from a wealthy and artistic family and used her fortune to support artists who exhibited with Les XX. Boch was one of the earliest collectors of modernism in the 1880s and owned works by, among others, James Ensor, Paul Gauguin, Georges Seurat, Paul Signac, and Vincent van Gogh.
