Part 2
The title “Prehistory” was meant to hint at the origins of relationships - the “before.” It could refer to a golden era of better times or the time prior to knowing someone else at all. It can also describe the time when being a band meant nothing more than being creative and spending time making songs: no label, no press, no managers, no agent, no money, no festivals, no jealousy, no pressure, no failure. In the case of this EP, it means all of these things. Sonically - the band opted to track the songs live, to tape, using analog gear. The intensity and vulnerability of these recordings can never be replicated. Finally, “Prehistory” has been unearthed and is available via streaming platforms.

“prehistory” is a piece of PNW music history. Recorded at the UNKNOWN in sleepy Anacortes, a port town outside of Seattle, by Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Beach House, etc), the EP chronicles a band in a state of upheaval and transition. Tracked to tape, MSHVB used a mainly “live” approach, utilizing an array of vintage analog gear, and natural reverbs. The goal was to capture something raw that matched the spirit of the songs. The result accurately conveyed the strength of a band known for their intense live shows.
The sessions were also documented visually in beautiful detail and shows MSHVB endeavoring to find themselves despite their enduring struggles.

“prehistory” is a piece of PNW music history. Recorded in 2011 at the UNKNOWN in sleepy Anacortes, a port town outside of Seattle, by Trevor Spencer (Father John Misty, Beach House, etc), the EP chronicles a band in a state of upheaval & transition. “prehistory” is a group of deeply personal songs that deal with loss, divorce, & the cruelty of the music industry. Singer and writer Benjamin Verdoes attempted to salvage the troubled band by tracking the foundation of the EP live - a group centered approach. Although the inevitable spiral of the band continued, the EP was finished and shared in a limited fashion. More than anything “prehistory” captures a band at the height of its abilities. Fresh off of years of writing and touring, young drumming phenom Marshall Verdoes, truly shines. Now, for the first time, “prehistory” will be made available through streaming services. Also included is a never-heard-before track called “Held Me.”
New single “February” out now 🗓️
Mt. St. Helens Vietnam Band resurface with a playfully tender song about apologies that often get left unsaid. Marshall Verdoes thunders down on the drums with carefree certainty, while the guitars and bass weave together a net for Benjamin’s soft vocals.
