šš„¼ Fishers and scientists are working together to protect the Iberian sardine
The comeback of Iberian sardines didnāt happen by chance. Fishers from Spain and Portugal teamed up with scientists to understand the stock, protect young fish and decide when and how much to fish. They listened to the science and adjusted their practices to give sardines time to recover.
Years of monitoring, sharing knowledge and working together have paid off. Today, the Iberian sardine fishery has been certified to the MSC standard.
When experience on the water meets science on land, everyone wins! Especially the ocean

šš Sardines are back! But not long ago, Iberian sardines were struggling and stocks were low.
Today, thereās good news is that now this fishery is MSC certified. This means that these sardines are now fished in a way that protects the ocean and the future.
How did they do it? Fishers took practical steps to protect the sardine stock:
ā reduced the amount of fishing taking place
ā introduced science-led catch limits,
ā started having closed seasons,
ā developed a shared Spanish and Portuguese management plan
But they didnāt do it alone. Spanish and Portuguese fishers, processors, distributors, scientists and NGOs came together to support the sardine comeback. And now, this fishery has earned MSC certification.
Now, when you choose Iberian sardines with the blue label, youāre supporting healthier oceans and the people who depend on them

This is who's behind some of your favourite tuna products š
Based in the Maldives, this fishery specialises in poleāandāline and handline fishing techniques, where the tuna are caught one at a time. This low-impact style of fishing helps reduce bycatch and protect marine life.
Thanks to strong management and collaboration, it has been MSC certified for almost 15 years š
Tuna fishing has been central to the Maldivian way of life for hundreds of years and remains a key source of employment for thousandsš

Which of these surprised you the most? š¤
Tunas arenāt just fast apex predators; they play a vital role in ocean ecosystems by regulating fish populations and keeping marine food chains stable.
Their population health is even used as a marker of overall ocean health!
š§ One last fact: some tunas can warm their eyes and brain separately from the rest of their body, boosting vision and reaction speed in cold, deep water.

Meet Snorre šš¦
An Afrikaans nickname meaning āwhiskersā, and one look at those long whiskers explains why!
Such a fascinating and gentle species, Cape fur seals like Snorre occur along the Namibian coast where fishing and other marine activities may unintentionally interact with them.
Thanks to collaboration between scientists, fishermen, and local governments, efforts are underway to protect seals like Snorre and safeguard Namibiaās rich marine biodiversity š

There is a lot that happens behind the scenes in sustainable fishing, and hereās an example aboard a boat in Mexico!
Did you know?š”
MSC certified fisheries are required to collect a range of quality information to support effective fisheries management.
One way this is done is by having on-board observers collect the data. These observers are independent specialists stationed on board commercial fishing vessels as part of at-sea monitoring programs.
Accurate data about the catch helps establish the status of fish stocks, understand the impacts of fishing on bycatch species and set sustainable fishing limits.
Another reason why collaboration is key š

Did you know that in Vietnamās Bįŗæn Tre clam fishery, fishers manage the clam beds using methods that help protect the coastās rich biodiversity? š”
They follow the moon and tidal cycles to determine the best time to harvest the clams š
Clams are then harvested by hand to avoid disturbing the seabed, and fishers leave around 20% of the smaller clams so they can naturally repopulate.
These careful practices show the powerful impact of working alongside nature to protect biodiversity š
