This is Zukhanya Nkabeni She was only 13 years old and lived in Khayelitsha. She is my niece. Like many teenagers, she sometimes made choices influenced by friends. Yesterday , she went to sleep over at a friend’s house in Harare. While there, she went inside the house even though the family wasn’t home. When the woman of the house returned, she and three other women — all parents — allegedly assaulted Zukhanya for being inside without permission. They beat her on the head with planks, leaving her with a serious head injury. The assault was so brutal that she could barely walk. Instead of calling her mother, whom they know, they chose violence. In pain, Zukhanya went into the woman’s room and swallowed ARV medication, as the doctors later confirmed. When her mom found her, she rushed her to the police station for help, but on the way Zukhanya had a seizure. She was immediately taken to Khayelitsha District Hospital, where she was still able to speak and give a statement. Within hours, despite the doctors’ best efforts, she sadly passed away due to internal swelling from the pills. Before she died, she managed to give a statement of what had happened. Yet, the women responsible have still not been arrested. Her mother is unemployed, and I did not have a funeral policy in place for her. We are now facing the painful reality of laying her to rest without the resources to do so. We are humbly asking for any assistance toward her funeral.
