Les Mis. Phantom of the Opera. Wicked. Mamma Mia. Iconic West End shows ya mum be buzzing to watch. Sing along to. Ya owd man, not so much. More interested in nipping out for a cig. But he’ll find himself whistling the tune to ‘I Dreamed a Dream’ a few days later. Whilst loading the car for a tip run. Or mowing the grass. Can’t get it owt his head. Still not over the grandeur of the Theatre Royal Haymarket, either. The stalls. The acoustics. “Take some building this.” He’d say. Repeatedly. Not actually arsed about what’s happening on stage. Nahh. Not one for the theatre, usually. Finds it all a bit boring. A bit posh. Pretentious. No right being there. Trainspotting the musical will change those feelings. Somet’ he can relate to instead. The music. The language. The characters. No “wherefore art thou.” No “to be or not to be.” Or any of that intellectual shite. Nahh. Just foul mouthed Scots. Spiralling. High on life. Shouting profanities. Wankers and c****s reverberating around the Royal Circle. Posh lot disgusted. Ya owd man, buzzing. “Bit of me this.” He says.
Irvine Welsh is behind it all, again. More than 30 years on from his debut novel. And the film in ’96. This time writing an adaptation for the stage. The West End. A musical for people who don’t like musicals. For the rebels. The outsiders. Renton, Sick Boy, Begbie, Spud, Tommy, and Kelly all return alongside a big fuck off live band. Pumping out classics from the film. Tunes that defied a generation. Ones ya owd man be buzzin’ over. “Take me back these.” Back to the ‘90s. When times were different. Life was different. Nights blurred into mornings. Days into weeks. Not a care in the world. Life. Relationships. Opportunities. All passed by. But ya owd man looks on. Beaming. Reminiscent. There’s a twinkle In his eye. Not had that since he first got his hands on a cordless drill few years back. It’s a different fix these days. Fair play.
This isn’t just nostalgia repackaged. It’s a genre-defying new musical. It’s radical. Life-affirming. Provocative. This is what it feels like to exist when the future looks shite. Choose life. Choose Irvine Welsh. Choose Trainspotting The Musical. Into ‘em.

Last week someone walked up to me and said excuse me , do you have a light ? I turned around and said I don't smoke. It just came out naturally. Walked off and felt quite chuffed. Today marks 3 months ago that I quit and this time it's for good . It has not been an easy ride and quite mentally challenging but I got there . It's over the no return mark. Will never go back. Happy Easter friends :)
Although not Brighton, local legend @mrstevemac has Been working on something pretty special for a while now and excited to finally share it.
I have written and produced the music for Trainspotting the Musical with Irvine Welsh and tickets go on sale today. It’s been a long process to get this over the line. Most projects like this never see the light of day so we are super excited to see this happening.
Irvine was just on TV BBC Breakfast announcing the show.
This is the first project I’ve worked on under my real name, Stephen McGuinness which I’ll be using moving forward as I step further into TV, film and theatre.
If you fancy coming down to see it, Click on the weblink below.
