Tucked slightly off the beaten path, even the most devoted food enthusiasts might be missing out on the vibrant and inventive
@mrr.fusion . Apologies to the insiders, but this hidden gem is too good not to share. With its playful take on ethnic flavors, Mr. R brings a fresh approach to Newport’s dining scene. Owned by the Ropolo family of Pasta Beach, this BYOB spot, which opened in the summer of 2023, is a complete departure from the traditional Italian fare that made its sister locations in Newport and Boston so popular. Instead, it’s all about small plates packed with big flavors, offering a whimsical mix of gastronomic styles that blend flavors, textures, and colors from a variety of world cuisines. As they describe it, “shareable food at its finest—familiar yet surprising.”
The menu plays with classics in unexpected ways. Their take on the lobster roll features a quarter pound of sweet lobster meat drizzled with bone marrow butter, pickled onion, and a mustard emulsion that lights up your palate. Cheesesteaks are topped with sweet and sour peppers and kimchi, while the Shrimp Kataifi—a trio of large shrimp coated in crispy, shredded phyllo dough and served with a wasabi dipping sauce—might just change your life.
Dumpling lovers will swoon over their pan-fried beef, Gruyere, and onion dumplings with onion marmalade, as well as the pulled pork and shrimp and Nduja varieties. Each dish is a tantalizing twist on a classic, from chicken Caesar to tacos, spaghetti and meatballs, fried rice, and seafood soup, all infused with unexpected flavor combinations that surprise and delight.
For those who prefer a more straightforward meal, options like grilled spicy garlic lamb skewers, smoked pork ribs in Asian barbecue sauce, and a burger are also available. Open for dinner Wednesday through Sunday and lunch on weekends, Mr. R’s is walk-in only, don’t forget to bring your wine.
