Revivolution is one of the most influential South African hip-hop groups there is. So when I saw they’re performing at the July edition of Barfest, I thought it’d be dope to share some of the images we’ve made over the years.
From battles at Scrambles for Money, to performances at Zone 6, to hangouts in Braam and at Inferno’s place in the East, this is but a small insight into how these cats operate.

1. Malachite (Butale) rock is mined then burnt to retrieve the copper ore (Kipo).
2. The Kipo is washed and placed in a furnace (Lwanzo).
3. Chef Mwilu Bena Mitumba VI, the master of "Lwanzo" which produces the copper cross (Mukuba).
4. Mukuba on display in a museum.
The copper cross was used as a form of currency. For example, 3 crosses would be given as dowry to help the couple begin their new life together. People would also travel from all over Africa to seek and trade items for the crosses. The Basanga also used copper to make tools.

Snippet from the making of the film about the mangeur de Cuivre ("copper eaters") from Walemba.
In this scene, the croisette (Mikuba) is being made by putting copper ore into a furnace until it becomes liquid. The smelter then pierces a small hole at the bottom of the furnace and the liquid runs into a "X"-shaped mold. The hymns are praises to the forefathers, for this technique has been passed on for generations. The Lwanzo (smeltery) we are filming in, is the same one that has been used for centuries.

The blue dome is meant to represent 'The Lwanzo" (hut where copper crosses are made). The crosses were also hung in the dome and created a constellation. We decided to project the film on the ceiling of the dome. We got these rather comfortable cushions that people could lie on and watch the film and experience the smelting of the copper crosses (Mikuba) whilst sitting in the Lwanzo.
