PSA: I am an artist not a charity. I pay my bills with my art and spend thousands of dollars in training to do it better every year. There are many affordable ways to interact with me and my work from free and low cost workshops to my books and public readings shared online. I don't believe artists need to be starving to be considered "real" artists. There are many organizations and grants to help pay for artists to participate in your events. Exposure is not compensation.
We don't ask lawyers to work for free or doctors to work for free but some of us have no problem asking artists to work for free and that's incredibly disrespectful. Do better!
Thanks for coming to my Ted talk.

Ode to Angeles Mesa Branch Library
we have a fireplace with a mural stretching up a tie-tapering chimney
in it / we declare education is a basic right // we plea schools not prisons
in the foreground two figures stopped in motion / cutting cotton
they work on a fieldâred and white stripedâbehind them / young people
fists held up // behind them cops and kids and parents // everyone is wpa-thickâ
as if the artists tried to capture the moment when every muscle flexedâthe painted
people look as if called upon to expand from flat to full they could still outwork us
my house / like here and so much else / was built around 1920 // spanish influence
hangs like street names / and that necktie-taper over the fire looks familiar
like waking up / as do the thick strips mortaring and decorating the brick façade
outside with standout latitudes between a stacked grids // the simple can
decorate and hold us together // I wonder if the same hands that build here
a century ago had part in the breakwater a few miles south or planting the palms
lining the streets outside // I wonder if the organic gardening workshop at 2pm
will tell us how to keep those trees alive past their 100-year average
or how to be heard this time / to let the next linda carol browns
and silvia mendezes learn without the need for fire
@lapubliclibrary is stamping catalog cards at and of each library. Go collect them (and maybe write a poem)! #poetry #libraries

What does the poet teacher do on his spring break? He goes to judge a teen poetry slam. Who said the kids don't care about anything, or poetry is dead. The passion I saw from students, teachers and the @getlitpoet team last week renewed my inspiration that the work we do with youth is vital and last beyond our time with them. Thank you to @rentpoet for the invite, what an incredible day in community seeing friends like @soulstuf , @medinawrites@maestrodesean and making new ones @matiasinmotion and more.
