What is Jโouvert?
The name Jโouvert originates from the French words โjour ouvert,โ meaning daybreak or morning, and signals the start of Carnival.
The celebration involves calypso or soca bands, DJs, and their followers dancing through the streets. In many countries, revelers cover their bodies in paint, mud, or pitch oil.
Historically and today, Jโouvert and Dutty Mas commemorate resistance and liberation, with elements of satire and mockery of the elites.โจ
The use of mud, oil, and paint has symbolic roots in breaking down social barriers โ everyone becomes โduttyโ together, regardless of status.
