I’ve always approached photography as a solo endeavor but l’m learning that in many regards it’s a team sport. I know it’s not actually a one man show because the people I photograph are part of the team but working alongside a stylist and designer was a welcomed experience. @leilah_talukder I’ve told you a million times but thank you for the opportunity and trust you placed in me to have a hand in this first line from @_leyata_ .
We spent 7 days and drove 1100 miles making sure this second trip to Iceland was everything I missed out on the first time. Yeah it’s cold most of the year and it’s not the most hospitable place but there’s nothing like it. Gonna need to run it back at least one more time because I’d like some aerial shots but I’m happy with what we managed to see this time around. #iceland
I’ve been convincing myself that sharing photos from the same set more than once was somehow wrong. I know how silly it sounds and I think it comes from a place of wanting to always have something new to share and while that’s cute it’s also me getting in my own way. I spend a lot of time editing old photos for fun so why not share the product and if anything having that many photos worth sharing is testament to my ability. So here are some more photos of Brenda at home from a few years ago.
Destiny and I have been geeking about these shots since I sent them to her a few days ago, and we’re both eager to see what we can come up with next. Thank you for inviting me into your home, considering you’ve never been keen on being photographed there. Thank you for taking so much of your day and having these be a reflection of the time spent together as opposed to some kind of production. Thank you for bringing some of my best work to date to life.
A week before I was supposed to photograph Eli she mentioned that her housemates were interested in being a part of the photos. Outside of events like weddings and photographing couples, I don’t typically photograph more than one person at a time. I try to rule out distractions between myself and the person I’m photographing, forcing them to be honest and vulnerable with me. That said, I loved every second of five hours I spent hanging out with these women. Watching them do each other’s makeup, trade shoes, exchange tops, the orchestrated chaos of it all led to what will undoubtedly be some of my strongest images this year. Eli, Cleo, Ye, Yailenne, Kyarra, thank you for this.
I've photographed Dominique four times, three of them this year alone. Like everyone else, there were things about her body she was initially critical of highlighting in her photos, but with each set, be it time, age, or just exhaustion, she made peace with those faults she once routinely mentioned. Of all the feedback I've received from people I've photographed, them acknowledging a deeper level of comfort and appreciation with themselves and of their body, despite their self critique, is a profound compliment. Thanks, Dom
