Almost 20 years ago, my new girlfriend Emma took me uptown to meet her parents. On the train up, I must have looked nervous because Emma decided to have fun with me and tell me I should be scared of her father. I nervously walked into the house and was greeted by the two warmest, funniest, kindest people I’d ever encountered, big Pete and Susie. The joke was on me: a punk kid from Florida.
