Wednesday marked another exciting chapter for the Special Liaison Branch as members of the Metropolitan Police Department continued building their growing relationship with staff and students from the Model Secondary School for the Deaf. Partnering together for friendly basketball games against the boys’ and girls’ teams, the event was filled with energy, laughter, and teamwork. What began as spirited competition quickly became an opportunity to strengthen connections, encourage one another, and create lasting memories. The day ended with hugs, smiles, and an even stronger sense of community and partnership between everyone involved.#deafandhardofhearingunit

Sgt. Lancaster proudly represented our Special Liaison Branch at today’s Touch-a-Truck event, connecting with community members of all ages. Events like these are a great opportunity to showcase the friendly faces behind the badge while giving families a hands-on look at the many vehicles that keep our city running. From police cruisers to public works equipment, there was something for everyone to explore and enjoy. We always appreciate opportunities that bring multiple agencies together and strengthen the bonds within our community.

Members of our Deaf and Hard of Hearing Unit recently met with students from the Community College of Baltimore County who are enrolled in the American Sign Language (ASL) interpreting program. These students represent various stages of their ASL learning journey. It was a privilege to engage with them, share insights, and answer their thoughtful questions. The visit also provided a valuable opportunity to connect with and recruit potential future officers who possess ASL skills, strengthening our ability to serve the Deaf and Hard of Hearing community.

On Tuesday, April 21, 2026, the ALU conducted a community outreach in collaboration with MOAPIA and the Embassy of the Republic of Korea. This marked our first joint effort to engage directly with members of the Korean community and local business owners. During the outreach, we visited a Korean-owned laundry business, where we spoke with the owner to better understand their concerns and address any questions. We also met with the President of the Korean Laundry Business Association of DC and held a productive discussion on community related matters. Contact information of both MOAPIA and Embassy of the Republic of Korea were given to business owners to support ongoing communication and to facilitate future meetings and collaborative events.

The Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Unit hosted members of the Youth Advisory Council from the Model Secondary School for the Deaf for a community outing to get Slurpees. This event is part of the unit’s ongoing efforts to build meaningful relationships with students and strengthen trust between youth and law enforcement. Through regular engagement like this, officers have been able to connect with students in a comfortable and supportive environment. These interactions have helped students feel more at ease when communicating with and reaching out to police. It has been rewarding to see these relationships continue to grow stronger over time. Creating positive, approachable experiences like this is what community policing is all about.
