Skiers and snowboarders of Juneau! The future of Eaglecrest Ski Area is in danger!
CBJ is seriously considering massive cuts to the Eaglecrest budget which could end Eaglecrest as we know it.
Please write to [email protected] and voice your full support for Eaglecrest in next year’s budget. Anything less will reduce operating days, which will reduce staff, and possibly lead to the end of our beloved ski area.
Even a few sentences help! The finance committee meets on May 13th and the full assembly will meet on May 18th. Make your voices heard!!

We offer incredible access to the backcountry, and that access is part of what makes this mountain so special 🏔️
But once you pass through those backcountry gates, you are entering the backcountry, and that comes with serious risk ⚠️
There is limited to no Ski Patrol response, limited to no avalanche control work, and no marked hazards beyond the ski area boundary. You are fully responsible for your own decisions, safety, and welfare 🫵
Backcountry terrain can include avalanches, terrain traps, unmarked obstacles, difficult navigation, and sudden weather changes 🌨️
Know before you go. Backcountry travel requires preparation, training, awareness, and the right equipment. Take the time to educate yourself on avalanche safety and how to reduce risk through smart decision-making in the mountains 📖
Helpful Backcountry Education Resources 🧭
Alaska Avalanche School offers avalanche education programs for backcountry skiers, snowboarders, and snowmachiners of all ages and ability levels. Their courses and workshops are designed to help people build the knowledge and skills needed for safer travel in avalanche terrain.
The Coastal Alaska Avalanche Center (CAAC) is a Juneau-based nonprofit focused on avalanche safety and accident prevention. CAAC supports the public with valuable information and education resources for backcountry users throughout the region. Questions can be directed to [email protected].
Mountain Edventures is made up of certified guides and avalanche professionals who provide backcountry education and programming, including opportunities for high school students with strong skiing or snowboarding abilities who want to explore the backcountry responsibly.

SURPRISE ADD-ON COURSE!
We weren’t planning to run a Youth Intro to Backcountry Course this season, but we had enough interest to make it happen.
We’ve opened a second group for next weekend (Saturday–Sunday January 31-February 1) and have four spots available.
This course is designed for motivated youth who are new to backcountry travel and want a solid, safety-focused introduction to:
-Avalanche awareness
-Gear use
-Decision making in winter terrain
Taught by experienced local instructors, in real conditions.
Details and registration are live now at

LAST CALL
Our final Level 1 Avalanche Course of the season starts this week.
Wednesday and Thursday, January 21–22 (evening Zooms)
Saturday and Sunday, January 24–25 (field days)
We’ve added an additional student group and have four remaining spots.
This course is taught by longtime local avalanche professionals and is designed for skiers and riders looking to make better decisions in Alaska terrain. The snowpack is just getting started. This is the right time to build solid skills before the season ramps up.
