Across three days, Ustad Zakir Hussain: The Way Forward was charged with everything the legendary artist made possible: rigour, invention, generosity, and a love of rhythm that could hold many traditions at once. What unfolded was an expression of his living legacy, coming together through performances, stories, and musical exchange. Our thanks to the curators, artists, and collaborators who shaped each evening with such depth and conviction, and to everyone who joined us in celebrating Ustad Zakir Hussain and the worlds he continues to open up. Ustad Zakir Hussain: The Way Forward, presented by the Kiran Nadar Museum of Art (@knmaindia ), unfolded as a three-day tribute to the enduring legacy of Zakir Hussain, bringing together rhythm, memory, and dialogue at Sunder Nursery, New Delhi (@sundernurserygardens ). Featuring performances curated by Yogesh Samsi (@yogesh.samsi ), Ranjit Barot (@ranjitbarot1 ), and Anantha R. Krishnan, alongside film screenings, conversations, and an exhibition of image works by Dayanita Singh (@dayanitasingh ), the festival moved fluidly between sound, image, and storytelling. Conceptualised by MT Aditya Srinivasan (@mountaditya ), the programme reflected on how Zakir Hussain’s influence continues to shape generations of musicians, reimagining rhythm as both inheritance and evolution, and inviting audience into a deeper, more immersive engagement with his legacy. #KNMA #ZakirHussain #IndianClassicalMusic #DelhiEvents #LiveMusic

“Abhi toh hum seekh rahe hain.” Few lines capture Ustad Zakir Hussain’s spirit as beautifully as this one. Speaking with KNMA, Dayanita Singh remembers her mentor whom she photographed for over four decades, revealing not only the brilliance of a legendary musician, but also his humility, wit, and deep sense of warmth that defined him. From the moving world of the ‘Musician’s Bus’, where Singh accompanied Hussain over several winters , journeys turned into impromptu baithaks with some of India’s greatest musicians. This series forms one part of her expansive photographic archive of Zakir Hussain - now reimagined for Sunder Nursery, where she presents image works from this journey alongside her talk ‘Travelling with Zakir Hussain’. Zakir Hussain emerges as a presence that left those around him deeply enriched regardless of medium. Join us at ‘Ustad Zakir Hussain: The Way Forward’ as these memories come together in tribute. 🗓️ 27–29 Mar 26 📍Sunder Nursery, New Delhi 🔗Click the link in bio to get your spot! An ode to Ustad Zakir Hussain’s unparalleled genius, Kiran Nadar Museum (@knmaindia ) presents “Ustad Zakir Hussain:The Way Forward”, a music festival and a visual archive, unfolding over a three-day period. Conceptualised by MT Aditya Srinivasan (@mountaditya ), who toured extensively with Ustad Zakir Hussain and worked closely with him as a recording and live sound engineer, a deeply informed personal and professional perspective shapes the festival’s conception. Anchoring the festival visually is an exhibition of image works by acclaimed photographer Dayanita Singh (@dayanitasingh ), whose long-standing association with Zakir Hussain has produced an intimate archive of a visual exhibition, deeply informed by her professional and personal friendship. Beyond the performances, curated by three of his close collaborators, Yogesh Samsi (@yogesh.samsi ), Ranjit Barot (@ranjitbarot1 ), and Anantha R. Krishnan (@misterdangam ), the programme also features film screenings, talks, and conversations that trace the enduring creative legacy Zakir Hussain has left across generations. When and Where? 27th – 29th March, 2026 at Sunder Nursery, New Delhi. #DelhiEvents #KiranNadarMuseumofArt #DelhiMusicFestival

There are some artists whose influence cannot be contained within performance alone. Ustad Zakir Hussain is one of them. Training from an early age with his father, the late Ustad Alla Rakha, his journey with the tabla went on to become one of the most extraordinary musical legacies of our time. This video includes excerpts from ‘The Speaking Hand’, a documentary film by Sumantra Ghosal tracing Ustad Zakir Hussain’s journey as one of the most influential exponents of the tabla. Don’t miss the screening of ‘The Speaking Hand’ on Day 3 of the programme. ⏰ 5.00 pm 🗓️ Sunday, 29 Mar 26 📍 Amphitheatre, Sunder Nursery, New Delhi Join us for this special tribute to the Ustad. 🗓️ 27–29 Mar 26 📍Sunder Nursery, New Delhi 🔗Click the link in bio to get your spot! 5.30 pm 27th March please join us in offering a shradhanjali to our beloved Zakir ji . This will be at the sunken garden at Sundar nursery. At 6 pm I will share stories of the Musicians Bus - and we will display images from that series. But what for me is the big surprise are the Zakirisms - the image text works (ongoing so please send me quotes you remember- with sources) that hint at his unique and brilliant mind and his humility. The sentence above was said just 4 months before his passing , at the gurupurnima in August . At 7 pm @yogesh.samsi will curate a tabla session in tribute to zakir ji. The first in the 3 day programme that @mountaditya has curated for @knma Please join us for the shradhanjali. 27th March 5.30 pm. @zakirhq9 @anisahqp @takadhiga @fazalq13 @taufiqdjembe @indian_classical_music @zakirhussainim #zakirisms
