Thanks to @prosperiarchitecture for sharing these gorgeous images of a past project of ours - working with architects, Quinlan and Francis Terry., we built the wings a few years ago. A country house in the parish of Donhead St Andrew in Wiltshire, England.

There has been a settlement on the site since 1225 AD. The current house, which is the third to occupy the site, was designed by the 2005 Driehaus Prize winner Quinlan Terry in 2001.

“The house was in a very poor state when we started and needed a terrific amount of repair to get it back on its feet again. This is something I particularly enjoy about my job, breathing new life back into a tired old building.” ~ Brett, Site Supervisor. This was one of our favourite projects, completed a few years ago - a top-to-toe restoration of Grade II Listed farmhouse dating in part to the 17th century.  The team re-roofed the entire property with replacement dormer windows, replaced all timber casement windows into restored stone mullioned openings, and built a new single storey extension in reclaimed brick and plain clay tile, balancing rustic character with contemporary elegance and adding a large living kitchen without losing the feel of the original building. The agricultural buildings were converted using wany-edged larch and oak weatherboard with metal casement windows, retaining their farmyard character. In the formal gardens, a new thatched cob wall encloses the swimming pool and greenhouse. Inside, Purbeck stone, oak and parquet flooring were used throughout, and the house now provides seven bedrooms, each with its own ensuite bathroom. A building that needed everything, given exactly that. Architect: @simonmorrayjones 📸: @jakeindoors

This was originally a Tudor house, rebuilt after a fire in 1742 by architects John and William Bastard of Blandford, then enlarged again in the 1770s with interiors designed by James Wyatt. That’s nearly 300 years of history sitting under a roof that needed replacing. Scaffolding over 2000m² of roof on a Grade I listed country house is no small undertaking, especially when the house remains fully occupied throughout. A temporary scaffold roof with bridging beams and additional buttresses kept the historic fabric and interior completely dry while the principal rooms below kept their views of the estate. Over half a kilometre of scaffold tube went up before a single slate came off! The work covered 12 separate roof areas, each stripped, repaired and re-covered individually, with slate, clay tile and lead sheet finishes across the main house and the 19th-century Porte Cochere designed by Thomas Hopper. High-level stonework was restored, a replacement glazed roof lantern installed, and new flush glazed rooflights, roof access walkways and lightning protection all brought up to standard. Delivered ahead of schedule and under budget. Architect: Malcolm Simmonds Project Manager: @tmpengineers #tbt #mouldingthebuilder #countryhouserestoration #thecountryhousebuilder #roofrestoration

Proof that a Grade II listed restoration doesn’t have to mean playing it safe with colour. This late 18th-century property was extensively restored and extended, with a new roof structure, a contemporary glazed extension on one side and a traditionally designed two-storey extension on the other. The building work brought the property back to life. The interiors gave it personality. Every room tells a different story, from bold wall colours and statement wallpaper to original fireplace detailing and a spiralled wine cellar. Not every Victorian school gets a second life this good. Back in 2005, we carried out extensive alterations and a first floor extension to this Grade II Listed former Victorian school house, dating back to 1844. The extension was constructed in dressed ashlar using local Greensand stone, matched perfectly to the existing masonry, combing modern design with the original mullion windows. Inside, new Chicksgrove stone and natural oak floor finishes. Bespoke cabinetry, underfloor heating and rainwater harvesting. Outside, formal garden areas with paved surfaces and ironwork, plus a new greenhouse and garden shed. The Greensand stone has only got better with age. A kitchen transformed by light. Part of a wider country house restoration, this room was completely reworked from the ground up. New window openings were carefully formed to flood the space with natural light and open up views to the garden beyond. Services were renewed, new flooring laid, and the structure reshaped before the finished layer could begin. @guildanderson then designed and built a kitchen that feels like it’s always been here. Hand-painted cabinetry, bespoke storage concealing full-size @miele appliances, and a pantry cabinet with its interior finished in Sang De Boeuf by @edwardbulmerpaint . The Butler’s sink sits beneath one of the new windows, turning the most ordinary task into something worth lingering over. Thoughtful construction working alongside thoughtful design. Looking lovely in the sunshine ☀️ This New Forest cottage, built in the Orné style, has been carefully restored and extended. Externally complete, but there’s plenty still going on inside. #thecountryhousebuilder #mouldingthebuilder #countryhouserestoration
