Just like the song’s release, we decided late (mid Carnival season) to pursue getting this project done. I had no idea what the backstory was, just a strong sense of this is the song we need to feature this year in our Song Check series.
Then I stumbled on a post by
@internationalstephen sharing his role in being the A&R that got the song into Voice’s hands and as I dug further I realized it was originally composed by
@dwayne.mendes from St. Lucia. I didn’t know any of them personally but a chance encounter with someone who knew Dwayne was the starting point to making contact.
Reached out and it just so happened that he was going to be in Trinidad in the next couple of weeks so we locked in an interview with no idea how I was going to make the rest of it work. He put me on to Stephen who also happened to be in Trinidad same time. As I started researching who the other key players involved were and who I had in my network that could put me in touch with them, things started to fall into place.
@megamicktt who produced it alongside
@lunatixproductions were both ready and willing to jump on board for the interview. Some scheduling conflicts made it challenging to do Alex but we were able to organize accordingly with Mick.
Nothing worth having comes easy though. The premise of series itself is to have the Artist breakdown the lyrical content of song as well as references regarding its music production. But again, because this all unfolded in the peak of the season, getting in touch with
@voicetheartiste turned out to be the trickiest far less actually getting the time carved out to fit in an interview with everything else he had going on. Reached out directly as well as via several channels and at some point felt like it probably didn’t make sense, that it was already so late. Lo and behold on my birthday is when I finally go a response and from there we went full throttle into securing and conducting the interview!
My favourite parts of this journey is all the fascinating nuggets tied to this song. It went from being written as an ultra pop masterpiece to becoming a crowd favourite as a mega soca hit. Excited for y’all to be able to hear them now too!
