Growing up as a Chinese immigrant kid in America, I used to shrink parts of myself. I softened my name. I avoided speaking Chinese in public. I downplayed the food, the traditions, the red envelopes — all because I was afraid of being “too different.” So I softened my culture to fit in. I thought blending in meant belonging.
But as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that everything I once tried to hide is actually my foundation.
Lunar New Year isn’t just a holiday to me — it’s a reminder of where I come from. It’s the sound of laughter around a dinner table, the smell of incense, the crackle of firecrackers, the quiet sacrifices my parents made so I could have opportunities they never did.
It reminds me of 家 (Jiā) — family.
Of 根 (Gēn) — roots.
Of 福 (Fú) — the blessings earned through sacrifice.
As I grew, I began to understand the weight and beauty of those words. I see my parents’ courage more clearly. They built a life from the ground up so I could dream bigger. That resilience lives in me. Their courage became my compass.
Now, I don’t hide my culture — I honor it.
I embrace the traditions, the language, the food, the stories, the resilience. Because this is who I am. This is what shaped me.
Lunar New Year symbolizes a fresh start — 新年快乐 (Xīnnián kuàilè), Happy New Year — but for me it also means continuing the journey. Building a life that would make my ancestors proud. Creating opportunities for the next generation. Carrying forward the sacrifices that built this foundation.
This year, I step forward with gratitude and pride.
From once trying to fit in, to finally standing fully in who I am.
Wishing everyone 幸福安康 (Xìngfú ānkāng) — happiness, peace, and well-being.

Huge thank you to my photographer
@most_one for beautifully capturing the details of my cheongsam (旗袍) — traditional Chinese dress and the story it carries. So grateful for your eye and intention. You didn’t just take photos, you honored the culture in every frame. ❤️
