A huge thank you to Statens Kunstfond for awarding Colour Drenched
@avlskarlgallery The committee adds these lovely words:
In the exhibition Colour Drenched, Morten Løbner Espersen returns to one of the archetypes of Danish ceramics: the cylinder. This forms the basis for Espersen’s mineral glaze experiments, where combinations of glazes – despite their often volcanic expression – merge into a chromatic whole.
In the new exhibition, this approach is turned on its head. Here, Espersen places horizontal bands of different glaze colours and types around the cylinder, which melt and flow into each other during firing. As the exhibition title suggests, the result is a true orgy of colour. Espersen does not hold back from letting colours clash: orange, turquoise, yellow, blue and green appear on one and the same pot. With over 30 works on display in Avlskarl Gallery, one enters a ceramic cornucopia.
The most fascinating thing about the exhibition is not only the joy of colour, but also how it reveals the complexity of the ceramic glazes. As attractive as the individual bands of colour are, the real magic occurs in the encounter between the glazes. Here, for example, two matt glazes can become glossy, while a turquoise and an orange glaze can be transformed into white. In general, one begins to sense the chemical foundation on which Espersen’s seemingly playfully easy grip rests. The exhibition thus appears as a tour de force through the many winding paths of the glaze and clearly shows why Espersen is considered one of the most distinctive ceramists both nationally and internationally.
This week is the last chance to see the exhibition. The final day is set to Saturday 2/5. Opening hours 12-5 Wednesday to Friday and Saturday 12-3. Hope to see you on Saturday where I’ll be present.
