Maggie McDowell is learning to take it easy. As we sipped cups of tea at her bakery,
@magpies_on_pinkstreet , a storybook collage of floral wallpaper, hand-drawn menus, and T-shirts screenprinted with perfectly latticed pies, she described the process of adjusting to winter in the mountains. The trees were already past peak foliage when we talked in late October; snow was no longer an “if” but a “when” and “how much.” Still, she insisted, she has grown to love the chill in the air, to accept it as a lesson in embracing change.
It’s here, in Delancey, New York, a one-road hamlet that hasn’t had a post office since 2004, that McDowell hopes to build a flaky, buttery wonderland. What began as a way to connect to neighbors during the pandemic — a door-to-door delivery service she dubbed “Pie It Forward” — has blossomed into a beloved local business.
