My grandfather was buried at sea decades ago off the Southern California coast.
Every time I cross the shipping lane, I bring a flower, say a quiet prayer, and toss it into the water for him.
Maybe it’s tradition. Maybe it’s healing. Maybe it’s just my way of saying thank you for safe passage.
I never got the chance to know him, but somehow I still miss him. I still feel connected to him out there.
“The ocean is the source of all life,” he used to say.
Maybe that’s why it heals. Maybe that’s why it calls us back.
