In the 18th century, the understanding of “interior” shifted from a definition referring to the simple separation of inside from outside to one referring to a cultural construct embodying “interiority”—the designed image of domestic space. To embrace the romanticization of the image of the interior as an effective facet of an architecture’s potency is to empower the architect to enhance the discipline of space-making through the outlets of materiality, arrangement, framing, texture, collection, curation, and scenography.
“The Looking-Glass Wall” exercises an approach to architectural design that embraces these constituents of the domestic interior as the catalysts for the design process. Through the treatment of the aforementioned elements as the ingredients for the scening of the interior, the partition wall becomes the provenance of an individuals’ relationship to a larger architecture and serves as a precognition of this architecture’s relationship with these essential domestic elements.
