Another 800 young trees from our Community Tree Nurseries have been planted back on Dartmoor — taking root in special exclusion plots as part of the mission to expand Wistman’s Wood, one of the South West’s last surviving temperate rainforests 🌳✨ ⠀
⠀
Moor Trees has teamed up with @theduchyofcornwall@naturalengland and the @woodlandtrust to help restore and gradually double the size of this iconic ancient woodland. A huge thanks to the amazing volunteers who gathered the seeds, nurtured the saplings, and joined us on the planting day 🙌🌿 This builds on the 450 saplings planted last Spring 🍃⠀
⠀
Why it matters: ⠀
🌳 Wistman’s Wood is a National Nature Reserve (NNR), Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and Special Area of Conservation (SAC) ⠀
🌿 Temperate rainforests are globally rare, covering less than 1% of the planet’s surface ⠀
🌱 90% of temperate rainforest has been lost since the Bronze Age ⠀
⠀
As Jess Duffy, our Woodland Officer, put it: “It is vital that right across Dartmoor we are able to help restore and create new temperate rainforest habitats. Working in partnership is a really effective way to achieve this.” 👏🌳 ⠀

🌿 We’ve reached an incredible milestone! 🌿
🌳 This weekend, our fantastic volunteers planted Moor Trees’ 200,000th native tree 🌳 It’s a huge moment in our mission to restore and reconnect Dartmoor’s woodlands. 🎉
🌳 The milestone oak was grown from locally collected seed in our Community Tree Nurseries and planted by a marvellous group of young volunteers, alongside a commemorative plaque. This took place during a day of celebration, community spirit, and shared commitment towards helping nature recovery. 🙌
🌳 Every tree we plant supports wildlife, connects habitats, and helps build a more resilient Dartmoor. We’re already looking ahead to the next chapter – can you help us with planting the next 200,000?

🌳🌳🌳💚Volunteers have planted 450 saplings to help create a "mirror" of the iconic Wistman's Wood 🌳🌳🌳 They have been grown in our #Dartington Community Tree nursery after Moor Trees volunteers collected acorns and rowan seed from Wistman's (with special permission) in previous years 🌱🪴🥾🥾 Our volunteers also helped protect naturally regenerated saplings around the woodland edge with cactus guards, to give them the best chance to survive and thrive 💚🌳🌳🌳
🙏A huge thanks to the Duchy of Cornwall @princeandprincessofwales@woodlandtrust@naturalengland and the tenant farmers for making this happen, and for the support from all the volunteers including our friend 🌼@francestophill who helped get the trees into their new home! 🌳🌳🌳
🌳You can read all about it on our web news page (link in the bio) 💻
🌳🌳🌳🥾💚Thank you to everyone who has been involved in every step of the process, from collecting the seed, nurturing the trees and planting them to make sure future generations of people and wildlife can enjoy the benefits of this wonderful place 💚🥾🌳🌳🌳

🍃It’s National Plant Health Week and we are proud that as part of the original pilot scheme we were one of the first Community Tree Nurseries to achieve Plant Healthy certification.
🌱Plant Healthy means we are taking every-day steps to responsibly manage biosecurity risks. This means measures such as boot washes and tool cleaning to prevent soil-bourne diseases being accidentally brought onto our tree nurseries, a quarantine area for deliveries and ensuring all our trees are traceable.
🌳 We are also UK and Ireland Sourced and Grown Assurance Scheme (UKISG) certified - a voluntary biosecurity initiative for tree nurseries. You can find us and other participating tree nurseries on the @woodlandtrust UKISG map

🌱Meanwhile, keep an eye out for Wych Elm seeds at this time of year - it's one of the 34 species of native tree and shrub that we grow⠀
We’re thrilled to welcome environmental campaigner and author @guy.shrubsole to Moor Understanding at the @riversandmoorland .
At 6pm on Friday 5 June in Ivybridge’s Watermark, Guy will explore the lost temperate rainforests that once covered much of the South West - what’s been lost, what can still be restored, and the growing movement to bring back Dartmoor’s rainforests.
Following the talk, Guy will be joined by Helen Aldis from @moortrees and Jess Tatton-Brown from @woodlandtrust for a discussion and audience Q&A exploring how woodland regeneration can help reduce flooding, improve water quality, support biodiversity, and reconnect communities with the living systems that sustain us.
Moor Understanding is a day of talks, workshops and conversations produced by Sustainable South Hams’ Rally for Nature project in collaboration with Dartmoor’s Dynamic Landscapes.
🎟 A Friday festival ticket is required and gives access to the full Friday programme.

🍃It's National Hedgerow Week! ⠀
⠀
🌱As well as native woodland creation, our work sometimes includes planting hedges of native trees and shrubs. Hedges are wonderful for wildlife, creating corridors and connecting habitats, also providing food and shelter. ⠀
⠀
🌳Native trees are an important part of our Devon hedgerows and May is a truly spectacular time to enjoy the colourful wildflowers in them. You will often spot woodland indicator species like Wild Garlic, Bluebells and Dog's Mercury.⠀
⠀
🥾We finished up our tree planting season by working with the @theduchyofcornwall to restore an old hedgerow in Princetown on Dartmoor with the help volunteers including the @1stplymptonscoutgroup . The site is a great example of a hedgerow connecting people and nature - improving the area to benefit both wildlife and the local community.⠀

We've Raised £8,260, But We're Not Done Yet 💚
With just 2 days left of Big Give's Earth Raise match-funding, we've raised £8,260 towards our £15,000 goal and every pound donated before 29th April is still being automatically doubled.
Nature has an incredible design for wildlife habitats, capturing heavy rainfall and stabilising rising temperatures – they’re called trees. Yet, many of Dartmoor’s river valleys, which were once teeming with life under biodiverse tree canopy, are now bare.
We are working to fix this by returning tree seed and planting the right trees in the right places, but our Big Give Earth Raise appeal closes in 48 hours.
If you haven’t had a chance to donate yet, now is the moment. Please help us make the most of this opportunity to restore Dartmoor’s vital river valleys.
