Some lessons you have to learn the hard way. 😼 @officialvirtualriot hosted an AMA on r/edm last week, and there was A LOT to learn. 🔥 We saved some of our favourite tidbits to share with you. 1. Stop watching so many tutorials.
“I’d say at the beginning you shouldn’t watch too many tutorials, especially the ones that are like “How to make this one specific sound” because they rarely teach you how all the parts that make the sound work together.”
2. Messing around is part of the process.
“It’s incredibly valuable to have the experience of “******* around and finding out” even if it can be frustrating at times.”
3. Every sound comes down to 3 things.
“Usually any sound I hear and want to recreate consists of 3 main elements, listen to what the Volume is doing, what the pitch is doing and what frequencies are playing and how they’re changing over time.”
4. You never really reach ‘I know what I’m doing.’
“I still learn new things and I don’t know if you ever get to a “I definitely know what I’m doing” point haha, its like the circumference of darkness grows with the brightness of the light, the more you know the more you know that you don’t know.”
5. Sound design isn’t magic. It’s problem-solving.
“I’ll often start with just a saw wave and get the pitch movement right first, then maybe an LFO on the volume to get the “phrasing” or rhythm of the sound right, and then go and figure out if its FM or Wavetable stuff that’ll get me closest towards the sound I’m looking for :)”
6. Make the music YOU want to hear.
“Be yourself, make the music YOU want to hear”
