Representation starts with who’s in the room shaping the narrative. As part of our #YesToRepresentation campaign for #AANHPI Heritage Month, we’re spotlighting Alan Chu, a proud Chinese film producer and member of the 2023 class of the Shondaland and Netflix Producers Inclusion Initiative. In his video, Alan reflects on the first movie he saw himself represented (hint: it involves Bruce Lee!) and shares the story of his grandfather he’d like to see portrayed on screen.

Canadian Screen Award nominee and veteran Hollywood actor Tzi Ma boards Quentin Lee’s CANCON indie feature The Way You Dance as Producer and the all-Canadian dad. Vancouver’s Kyle Toy (The Arrangement, Center Stage: On Pointe) has also signed on to play Twinkle Lee, the protagonist. 2024 Canadian Screen Award winning producers Cindy Au Yeung and Quentin Lee will produce the independently financed feature out of their BC-based shingle Margin Films Ltd. The Open Reel, the Italian international film sales outfit, will be distributing the feature internationally while Executive Producer Jennifer Price, formerly the Los Angeles representative for the Quebec Film and Television Council, will be handling the film’s North American sales with Producer/ Director Lee. Written and to be directed and produced by Lee, The Way You Dance is a dance-driven drama about a successful choreographer (Kyle Toy) returning home to British Columbia to care for his estranged father (Tzi Ma) with terminal cancer and finds redemption, healing, and purpose by mentoring a diverse community dance class — including a transgender teen struggling to live authentically. #thewayyoudance
