Was watching my good friend @don.lov and his interview again today. It really had me marinate on several things. Im my 25 years of doing not just breaking events but hip hop events the presentation ive always been big on with events.
Shout out to @manbitesdogrecords & @empuls._ for booking me early in my younger days and learning the art of details and creating a vibe.
The flyer/cover designs have always been important to me. You’re not just creating for attention. You’re creating for feeling. For that moment where someone sees your flyer and thinks, “Yeah… that’s my type of crowd.”
If your flyer looks like it could belong to anybody, it ends up belonging to nobody. Then people wonder why turnout is inconsistent. Why things don’t stick. Why every event feels like it has to start from zero again. It’s because nothing is building on top of itself and its starting to show.
When you work with a local artist, you’re not just hiring someone to make something look good. You’re working with someone who understands context.
They know what your crowd actually responds to not what’s trending globally, but what resonates. They know the difference between something that looks impressive and something that feels authentic.
They’re translators
And the longer you work with them, the stronger that translation gets. They start to understand your brand better than you can explain it. They anticipate where you’re going. They build with you, not just for you.
That’s not something you can replicate with a one off prompt.
If everything around your event is built for speed and cost cutting, your event will feel like it. But when everything is built with intention, collaboration, and care, people feel that too, even if they can’t explain why.
Because scenes don’t grow from shortcuts.
They grow from people investing in each other. From artists, DJs, promoters, dancers all contributing something real to the same space. At the end of the day, anybody can make a flyer now. But not everybody can create something people believe in , and for me that’s the difference between an event, and a scene.

6 years in the making...
The point of reference came straight from Sade’s Stronger Than Pride. Growing up, my father kept Sade, Loose Ends, Tears for Fears, and Phil Collins stacked by the living-room CD player—those were the soundtracks of the house, and Sade has always been a favorite of mine.
Rita Studios will always hold a special place for me. Not just because Andrick is a good friend, but because he pours real time and detail into everything he touches. I’ve always valued working with people who can teach me something new, and he’s definitely done that. Much love for putting me onto Daido Moriyama and Masahisa Fukase.
