Great progress underway in strengthening community resilience across Monaghan!
Monaghan County Council recently held a demonstration at Magheracloone Community Centre showcasing a new generator changeover switch — helping ensure the centre can stay powered during outages ⚡
This initiative will help Community Support Centres remain operational and further strengthen the ability of communities to support one another during emergencies and severe weather events.
So far:
📍 24 centres identified across the county
⚡ 14 already equipped for emergency generator use
🔧 More on the way
A big thank you to @magheracloonecommunitycentre Committee, who shared how vital the centre was during Storm Éowyn—providing meals, showers, charging points, and a welcoming place for the community 💛
This work is all about making sure communities are supported when they need it most.

🌳 Climate Action in Practice in Monaghan’s Decarbonising Zone 🌍
Students from St Macartan’s College and St Louis Secondary School recently took part in biodiversity learning within the urban pocket forests established by Monaghan Tidy Towns in partnership with Pocket Forests Ireland through the Community Climate Action Programme funded by the Government of Ireland.
The pocket forests are a key example of place based climate action in Monaghan Town’s Decarbonising Zone. During the sessions, supported by the Monaghan County Council Climate Action Team, students explored native trees and insect biodiversity, gaining a deeper understanding of how nature supports climate resilience 🦋
This project is delivering on the Monaghan Climate Action Plan by:
🌱 Increasing urban tree cover and supporting carbon sequestration
🌼 Enhancing biodiversity and pollinator habitats
👥 Embedding climate awareness through hands on community and school engagement
This initiative highlights how climate investment can deliver real environmental impact while also educating and empowering the next generation to take climate action 🌍

The Cathaoirleach, Cllr PJ O'Hanlon and Members of Monaghan County Council were deeply honoured to host a Civic Reception on Monday, 11th May 2026 at the Shirley Arms Hotel in recognition of the extraordinary courage and resilience of the Appelbee Family.
Originally from Magheracloone, Joanne Appelbee and her family, now living in Perth, displayed remarkable strength in the face of an unimaginable ordeal following a kayaking incident on 30th January 2026. In an act of incredible bravery, Joanne’s son Austin swam for four hours to reach shore before continuing for a further two hours on foot to alert rescue services—an effort that ultimately led to the family being saved. His determination, alongside the resilience of the entire family, is truly inspiring.
This special evening was an opportunity for the people of Monaghan to recognise and celebrate the Appelbee Family’s courage, and to honour their deep connection to the county.

🚒 Equipment Upgrade for Monaghan Fire & Civil Protection
Monaghan County Council is delighted to announce the delivery of new battery‑operated road traffic collision rescue equipment in Ballybay, Castleblayney and Clones.
Funded by the National Directorate for Fire & Emergency Management (€133,455), this modern equipment will improve response times at serious RTCs and removes the need for fossil‑fuel generators — supporting our goal to reduce emissions by 30% by 2030.
