I realised mid-conversation with a colleague yesterday that people are hurt and are hurting. That I am hurt and hurting, I remembered this work I made earlier this year and only completed when I was going through it, yey! 🙆🏾 I remembered it's message to me. 'Vuma lobo buhlugu bukuguqule'. Was a quiet whisper I needed to hear, sharp yet comforting. I'm sharing this now because I know my people need to hear this. I hope you can find comfort in its message and may your healing locate you. 🖤

A deconstructed and reconfigured spirituality is an essential gesture, a movement that arises from the body and spans generations. Itis from this root that "ngilo engithi nginguye(I am who I say I am)" emerges. These 'monumental prints' made with a mixture of texture, construction are held together by an abstracted space, place and non place, emsamo. It evokes a site, the forms from which monuments specifically man made places of worship are the act of a false universal symbol of spirituality are built on.
My work begins with big gestures to the intimate but expands in scale in scale until it becomes a monument. By transforming personal experiences into collective experiences and vice versa, the work affirms that reconfigured spirituality is a creative practice and today, profoundly political and a radical act.

This work was made to honour and remember the names of women who died in the hands of men. These women made headlines for all the wrong reasons. The work is a collage of names, namely Tshegofatso Pule, Karabo Mokoena, Nosicelo Mtebeni, Anene Booysen, Olerato Mongale Reeva Steenkamp, Khwezi Hike, Gabi Ndaba, all encompassed by the profile of Uyinene. cloaked in candle smoke I moan and stand in shame as a man. Today I stand with #womenforchange against this national disaster. I employ you friend to take a stand. This disaster cannot define who we are.
