there is an alternate color version (2nd slide) and i think you can make out the characters better there but i leaned towards this version because of the ‘misty’ look.
I’ve struggled with this piece for a long time but only AFTER finishing it - at first i had it like on the last slide and while the digital sketch had looked good, this just was not it and i couldn’t figure out why. eventually i got angry, changed the pose and the colors and now it’s closer to the idea i originally had in mind whee angerismysource

I am so, so excited to finally be able to share the illustration of the Italian cover of „Outline“ with you!! I thought of this scene as being sort of an introduction/transition into the actual ‚prologue‘ of the story — that’s why the looks and the mood match the beginning of the comic, even though there are more ‚accessories‘ here.
While I am 9000% satisfied and confident about the German cover, the idea of „Outline“ having different covers in other countries feels thrilling - so, when the Italian publisher suggested finding a cover illustration where the protagonists are more visible, I immediately started procrastinating all my other to-dos and deadlines by diving into sketches. (also because I really love going back to the characters and that whole mood, even if it aaaaaches a lot, too - like, A LOT.)
Swipe for details and the backcover in the next slides, then some alternate cover ideas I liked, too.
Huge thanks to @baopublishing for giving „Outline“ an Italian home — and for giving me so much freedom with designing the cover. It was pure fun!

— a bit like a play, a bit like a fairytale. In preparation for this story, i rewatched the last unicorn & that 1970s beauty and the beast movie (by juraj herz) – just to give you an idea of the mood and inspiration.

it’s based off a text i wrote when i was 13 years old. so, naturally it was absolutely bad (and enormously cringy to reread). it was messy and clumsily told with plotholes all over. and still, despite its content or writing style, this story still feels precious to me as it was my entry into being an author and also into a universe i have never really stepped out of ever since. all my other fantasy story projects after this are part of the sphere i started creating with that first piece of fiction. so, i tried to revise the source material while preserving the story’s original premises.

In den nächsten Wochen stellen wir die Zeichner:innen vor, die wir vom 4. bis zum 7. Juni zum Comic-Salon Erlangen einladen.
Michèle Fischels studierte Design an der FH Münster und arbeitet als Illustratorin und Comiczeichnerin. Sie veröffentlichte neben Beiträgen in Anthologien ihr Onlinecomic-Projekt FAULT LINE. Für ihr Buchdebüt OUTLNE wurde Michèle Fischels u.a. mit dem Jahres-Luchs 2024 von Die Zeit und Radio Bremen sowie dem e.o.plauen-Förderpreis 2025 ausgezeichnet.
"Fischels Comic fängt von der ersten Seite an das Gefühl von Aufbruch und Abschied ein, diesen Schwebzustands des Dazwischen, der so köstlich wie angsteinflößend ist. Fischels treibt die Handlung über knappe Dialoge voran, es findet sich kein einziger gestelzter Dialog, kein aufgesetzter Erklärsatz. Streckenweise erzählt sie auch ganz ohne Worte und schafft Bilder von ungeheurem Sog und einer jugendlichen Leidenschaft – bemerkenswert, dass diese Arbeit ein Debüt ist! OUTLINE wurde bereits in einige Sprachen übersetzt, bei Bao ins Italienische, bei Dargaud ins Französische, bei Nagle ins Polnische – und für August 2026 ist die englischsprachige Fassung bei Oni Press angekündigt.
Michèles Comic AGLÆCA, bei ShortBox Comics Fair in digitaler Fassung auf Englisch erschienen, wurde 2025 auf dem Comicfestival Hamburg mit dem GINCO-Award für den One-Shot-Comic des Jahres ausgezeichnet.
Am Samstag um 17 Uhr liest Michèle im Stufensaal des kubic aus OUTLINE, des weiteren gibt sie Signierstunden bei uns am Stand – genaue Infos folgen in Kürze.
Alle runden Motive, die ihr hier auf Instagram zur Präsentation der Zeichner:innen sehen werdet, haben wir in Erlangen als Sticker am Stand.

Ils m’ont demandé de créer une nouvelle illustration de couverture, et ils ont choisi mon dessin préféré !! J’étais donc très heureuse de la faire. Mais en même temps, je deviens toujours, toujours sentimentale quand je retourne dans l’univers d’Outline. C’est la douleur dans la joie 🌚.

Casually outing myself as a bird brain by saying it actually was a bit of a mental challenge to put three characters into this position/perspective in an illustration without the one in the front automatically looking like the only and most important person in the book, and also without obscuring the view of the other characters. So candy andy is now doing that leaning back aerobics pose you do when you’re about to lift your legs :3

never expected to get inktober done this year!! A little self-portrait here because how incredible is it that i can say that this is the year my work won several awards, it’s forever overwhelming. It’s also been more plotintense and busy than probably my whole life before :’D.
But what feels most precious to me are the words of praise people have expressed in such beautiful and unique ways. I’ve heard so many heartwarming things that i hold close in my mind and to which i can return on the quieter, heavier days. 🩷
(also this might be the year i finally figured out how to ink properly and which paper to use - it’s always been a fight so far, my sketches tend to be too thin and smol to outline accurately. this inktober it went better than ever.)
