GEM Talks is a programme by the Grand Egyptian Museum that brings together diverse voices to examine Egypt’s past, present, and future through dialogue and cultural exchange.
This GEM Talk, 'Beyond the Screen: From Idea to Impact’, brought three experts to the stage to discuss how film and TV engages with social issues and public discourse. Dr. Nancy Ali, the Director of Innovation at Legacy, led the discussion with screenwriter and producer Mohamed Hefzy, director Omar Hilal, and screenwriter Mariam Naoum.
Tother, they mapped the process of bringing a story to life on-screen, from writing the script all the way through audience reactions—positive and negative—to the finished product.
Dr. Ali asked the panel questions about censorship, representation, and generational divides in the country. Cinema, she said, has always been a platform for self-expression, representation, and a way to tackle issues that may not be publicly discussed otherwise. The participants shared how they navigate taboos in Egypt and the importance of exposing audiences to diverse perspectives.
