Last days to experience Sculpture By The Sea!
Iāve been getting lots of questions about whether The Ghost of Van Eileen is a permanent or temporary installation. While Iād love for it to be permanent, this show finishes on March 23 and after that its future is undecided. The work is currently for sale and Iām actively looking for a buyer.
My vision for it is to find a permanent home in Cottesloe as a sculpture. The overwhelming response to the work from locals indicates that would be a popular outcome. The original site is now just part of a grassy park, so it could easily live there as a sculpture and historical marker.
Itās also been engineered so that it could be converted into a functional business and would make a great cafe or bar.
So now itās up to the people. If any of these ideas appeal to you, please reach out!

Jo White messaged me a few months back with a request ā make a surprise piece for a family member restoring a green 1966 Valiant Wayfarer Ute. She sent a couple of photos, a video, and left the rest up to me.
Joās a well established artist herself (@jowhite_theartist ) who loves to paint old cars, so this one felt like a privilege to make.

Another junkyard classic - 1966 Valiant Wayfarer Ute for a guy whoās spent years bringing this old workhorse back from the dead.
Made entirely from found objects that Iāve collected on my travels including; an old Penguin ice box, plywood from a 1950s Perth kitchen, laminate from a wrecked yacht found on a remote fishing trip, an old masonite easel, a 1940s suitcase and some Lino from a burnt out St Kilda squat.
Itās not hoarding if you make something with it!

Iāve been lucky to work with some amazing photographers over the years. Simon Westlake was there in the early days of my career over 30 years ago. These days we spend more time discussing our mutual love of various nerdy hobbies than actually shooting, but he was one of the first people I discussed the Van Eileen project with and Iām grateful for his enthusiasm from the very beginning.

The life and death of Van Eileen (1949ā1998)
My Sculpture By The Sea entry is based on Van Eileen (or EATS as it was known), a small beachside burger van in North Cottesloe that stood for almost 50 years. Run by Mr Bower and his mother, Eileen, they served hamburgers and hotdogsāfamously between slices of toasted bread rather than buns. It became a much-loved social meeting place. Rebuilt after a mysterious 1967 bombing and saved more than once by public outcry, Van Eileen was finally demolished in 1998, leaving a lasting legacy on WA beach culture.
āIt was a great social leveller ā tradies and beach bums would line up with judges, CEOs and pub patrons for the best steak sandwiches in town, then sit on the fence or their car bonnets and munch them overlooking the ocean.ā
