Happy International Womenās Day.
Today feels like the right time to acknowledge the SW community. For most of my adult life, these women and their allies have held me up - uplifting me, listening to me, protecting me, and caring for me when it mattered most.
āS*x work is the oldest profession in the world.ā - Rudyard Kipling, 1888
The representation of s_x work in mainstream media frequently vilifies, sensationalises, or condemns the worker. I document s\x work from a position that is both inside and outside; as participant and voyeur. My interest lies in that liminal space between the beheld and the spectator.
A large portion of society views sx workers as always helpless or without autonomy. My work does not attempt to critique or celebrate sex work. Instead, it presents an honest account of workers and their clients. This body of work contains diverse narratives - moments of tenderness, intimacy, transaction, distance, performance and connection.
There is no s*x work without the client. Their presence, often invisible in public discourse, is equally part of this ecosystem. Iām interested in their existence, their participation, and the dynamics between worker and client.
S-x workers remain marginalised and frequently oppressed. Documenting becomes a way of telling the truth as it is seen: complex, human, and often contradictory.
I cannot see a future that is not committed to documenting the histories of sex workers. Iām grateful for the opportunity to share my views during the panel at
