This is a photo of my cinematographer for #Remainfilm. @adolphoveloso was nominated for an #academyaward for his wonderful work on #traindreams. I loved working with Adolpho and I’m so happy his work is being recognized. This photo cracked me up. One because no one is talking to him at his table and two because this exactly the kind of framing we would do to show a character lost and out of place. Love always to my BBB. (Brilliant Brazilian Brother)
Through @soccermouaz , a leader we support through our @mnsfoundation we were able to invite @ahmedalahmedsydney the #bondibeachhero to our home and to dinner. What a lovely human being. We took him to our local Philly Italian restaurant and he told us the story of how he was looking for coffee with his nephew on Bondi Beach when the shooting started. He was hiding behind a car and had a clear path to leave and didn’t. He saw the man shooting everyone, asked God for strength and ran to the shooter. After disarming the first shooter, the second shooter shot him four times.
At the moment when this happened the first shooter was walking to the beach where hundreds and hundreds of people were lying down in the sand terrified and hiding. There would have been death on an unimaginable scale if he had reached there.
This Bondi Beach hero had his arm reconstructed and still has two bullets in his shoulder. He had to take meds during the dinner. And he hopes to get motion back. After telling us the events of that day he showed us the pictures of his two sweet little girls that he risked never seeing again.
It was an honor to meet him. I am moved to tears that there are human beings out there who care for all of us so much that they would sacrifice everything in the name of what is right.
My dear dear father has passed. The amount of loss we are feeling is immense. But it is mixed with gratitude for having had him in our lives for these many years.
I wanted to thank you for supporting me and allowing all my dreams to come true. My father came to America and got to see all of your love and it made him so happy.
No words can express how much I adore him. I will try to live up to his example of kindness, optimism and joy.
What an incredible and overwhelming feeling to be a part of this #1 @nytimes bestseller. @nicholassparks was a joy to collaborate with on the #REMAIN novel.
Books are my deep passion, so you can imagine what this means. Love to you all who made this #1.
And in exactly one year the film #Remainfilm will be in theaters all around the world. I’m hard at work editing now! Thank you so so much!
Incredible day at @anunlikelystory on the book tour for #Remain with @nicholassparks in Massachusetts. Over a 1200 people stood in the rain to see us. Everyone was so lovely. It was an inspiring day. Philly you’re next!
#grateful #booktour #remainfilm
Going to stop editing the film to go on the road. Love to see you guys there. Joining @nicholassparks in a couple of special places. One near where we shot #Remainfilm and one is home. We will be signing copies of the novel Nicholas wrote based on the story we came up with together. In Philly we will be doing a Q&A. What a cool collab this has been. We came up with a story. I wrote a screenplay. Nicholas wrote a novel simultaneously. We cheered each other on but left each other to take the idea in the directions that felt right. It is so wild that we are launching the book and the film has already been shot. Can’t wait to see you there!
It’s been a month since we wrapped #Remainfilm. It was an extraordinary experience in every way. From the breathtaking performances from @jakegyllenhaal and @phoebedynevor and @ashleywalters and the whole cast to the brilliant crew from around the world and Rhode Island itself where we shot which is filled with the most welcoming and beautiful people.
This photo was taken by my cinematographer Adolpho Veloso as I realized our shoot day was over. We got very lucky with weather. On small films like these, shooting on film, losing any part of a day is brutal. Fortunately we found a way to come back and finish this work. But at this moment I was considering why I didn’t become a doctor instead of a filmmaker.
I remember the day we took this photo. If I could whisper in that kid’s ear and tell him you will be so incredibly lucky to spend the next twenty years making films you are passionate about and the audience will show you such kindness for multiple generations it will make you tear up every time you think about it. And then there will be a thing called social media and you will type #grateful.
Can’t wait to see you guys on these evenings in nyc @filmlinc to talk about the memories of making these films. Each night is a double feature where I pair someone else’s film that has a special connection with one of mine. A lot of these are films that have inspired me.
