In celebration of our 160th anniversary, we are rolling out an updated expression of our name and a fresh, bright new look. Behind the scenes, we'll keep 'State' in our legal name and maintain our commitment to our local northern gardening community.
We believe our new branding reflects the joy and community that is at the heart of what we do. Learn more about our mission and values at northerngardener.org/about-us
We can't believe it's already been a week since we celebrated with so many of you at our annual Spring Garden Gala.
Together, we exceeded our goal of $100,000 to cover the event and raise crucial funds for Garden-in-a-Box and other organizational needs.
Thank you to everyone who showed up to bid on plants and tours, picked up some festive anniversary merchandise and raised a "petal" to pledge your support for Garden-in-a-Box. FYI: We're seeing that support in action right now during our distribution of boxes, soil, compost and plants to program participants... more to come on that soon!
Take a look at some of our favorite moments from one week ago. We can't wait to bring this experience to more of you in the years to come!

Thank you to everyone who's made our spring fundraising season such a success so far! Whether you've chipped in a few bucks or attended our Spring Garden Gala, every dollar helps to plant the seed for our next generation of gardenersāand the next 160 years!
Recently, our Executive Director, Lara Lau-Schommer, saw this truth in motion at Lake Harriet Community School in Minneapolis:
"Under a light September drizzle, students, teachers, and families gathered for the opening of a new school garden. With giant ribbon-cutting scissors in hand, the principal opened the gateway to months of planning and planting.
Then something truly special happened.
Cheers erupted in the schoolyard as children poured in, their bumblebee antenna headbands bobbing with excitement. They didnāt simply walk into their new gardenāthey ran in, claiming ownership of the blooming urban oasis they had helped create. They moved with confidence, as though the space was already theirs.
And in that moment, they were part of something larger ā a thriving, vibrant community."
Because of supporters like you:
⢠Young people across Minnesota are learning to grow food and care for the environment.
⢠Communities are transforming vacant spaces into gardens and pollinator habitats.
⢠Northern Gardener continues connecting tens of thousands of readers with expert advice.
⢠Programs like Minnesota Green and Garden-in-a-Box are strengthening neighborhoods statewide.
This is not just history. It is momentum.
This spring, we have a goal to raise $50,000 by June 1, 2026. These funds will expand youth education, deepen access to northern gardening knowledge, and strengthen the statewide community that has sustained this work.
We are asking you to be part of what comes next.
When the children ran into their garden, they stepped into a legacy created by people who came before themāpeople like you. And now, itās your turn to be part of the legacy that will grow for years to come.
Please consider a gift in honor of our 160th year or join us as a monthly donor today.
Together, we can plant the next 160 years of growth, knowledge, and connection. Thank you for helping us plant the next 160 years.
We are still looking for volunteers for this weekend's Garden-in-a-Box distribution! Join us on Friday and/or Saturday to get outside, support this program, and connect with some gardeners.
