Welcome back, R&B lovers! Here’s my final mmc photography highlight from Hamilton’s own Fresh Up Festival, featuring Toronto’s Queen herself, R&B singer-songwriter Leila Dey. Or… Ms. Leila Dey, if you’re nasty! 👑 I say that proudly because: A) I’m an old head, and 2) I’ve seen Ms. Jackson AND Leila Dey live. And honestly? They both give that fierce, superstar energy. I see it. I feel it. I hear it. That is my professional/non-prodessional opinion- but please refer to points A and 2 before judging me. 😌 Now let me get personal… I was born and raised in Toronto. No- actually from Toronto. Not GTA. Not Scarborough. Born In Toronto! 🤣 I hollered when Leila joked about the same thing on stage. I felt seen. I’m a true Torontonian, from a long line of Torontonians, and I’ve lived and worked across the city. It’s in my heart. For those of you who don’t know, I live in the Hamilton area now- and have for a while. Something I never thought I’d do . . . But here I am, with my family, loving it. That “hometown duality” is real, and it thrives. The music scene and venues here have exceeded my TO expectations. So, @freshupfest Hamilton - here are your flowers 💐 And to Ms. Leila Dey - 🌹 and the band 💐💐 yours as well.

Post #3 from Hamilton’s Fresh Up RnB concert, and this one is all about @lovemauvey What I love about RnB is how honest it is. It takes a lot for a man to show up as himself- emotional, open, and creating from a real place. When you can feel the story and the heart in a performance, that’s the good stuff. Mauvey definitely gave me all the feels, and I hope I was able to capture a bit of that in these photos. I’m also a big believer in giving flowers while people are still in the process- building, experimenting, and pushing the sound forward. New voices and fresh ideas deserve to been seen and celebrated. Here’s to the men in RnB who show up fully, speak their truth, and lead with heart. 🎤✨🔥 Signed, a new fan

It’s been a minute since I dropped something on the feed-annnnd YES, we’re talking music again. Why? Because music is life, and I’m still living in it. This past Friday, J-J-J-Jay One and I pulled up to the 3rd annual Fresh Up RnB concert series at Bridgeworks in Hamilton. I didn’t bring my camera this time, but I did catch some moments on my phone that I had to share. I share because I care. Do you agree, after water, Music is life? My love of music lives fondly in remembering the sounds of my childhood. Record Players and 8-tracks and AM/FM radios played- #Blues #Jazz Motown, Funk, #rnbsoul, Reggae, Rap, #hiphop. One of my earliest music memories is listening to the lyrics of James Brown playing loudly as my Grandfather engaged by nodding along. The message and struggles were personal to him. The rhythm and beats spoke to my body, and the lyrics to my soul. And like the personalities in my family, the energy emoting from the performance was equally important in telling the story. It was these, vivid, colourful, and emotionally charged experiences that created a need to do the same thing in my life. I can’t sing, play an instruments, or write song lyrics, but I do understand emotion, communication, and art. I know how it makes me feel and I know how connected I feel to the artist and community at large when I hear them put their all, into their creative expression. This sentiment is what makes me a music fan. Real, authentic emotion.
