We went to Hawai'i to film a documentary about the extinct and endangered honeycreepers, birds endemic to these isolated islands. Our trip is ongoing but here's an in-progress photo dump.
1&2: beautiful but devastatingly silent Pihea Trail in Kaua'i
3: portraits of honeycreepers inside the office of the Kauaʻi Forest Bird Recovery Project
4: the record-breaking kona storm hit Kaua'i hard overnight. Our street flooded, forcing us to abandon our rental car to make our flight to the Big Island
5&6: driving through the storm to our Airbnb on the Big Island
7: Mason eating dinner with a headlamp because the storm caused blackouts
8: Mason getting a closeup shot of the 'ohi'a lehua, an endemic flower important to the honeycreepers and currently threatened by a fungus
9: driving through the fog
10: amazing sounds at the black sand beach
11: mason gathering water so we can flush the toilet at the Airbnb that has no power (and therefore no running water)
12&13: visiting a protected conservation area of the Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge, home to the healthiest population of honeycreepers in the state
14: the storm's still not over after a week of heavy rain, but we were gifted with a Hawaiian rainbow 🌈
I painted a bedroom mural for @efcote and @sujhap 's baby Milo (my little nibling!) She is 3 months old today and I've been told she enjoys staring at it 🥹
Back on @callshopradio today at noon EST (6 PM CET)! Playing some of my favorite tracks of the year—spanning ambient, shoegaze, and trip hop. This will be my last show before a little hiatus, but Ecstatic Origins will be back sometime in 2025 🫶 callshopradio.com 🔗 Art by @mlecot 🐠
