AFTER THE STORM: MEMORY AND LOSS Indi Saxena, a third-year MLA, is exploring the cultural and emotional impacts of hurricane-driven tree loss in Florida’s Central Gulf Coast communities following Hurricanes Helene and Milton in 2024. As a native Floridian, he has long been fascinated by the rapid landscape destruction these storms can cause. During his time at UGA, and through internships with a small design firm in the Sarasota area during the summers of 2024 and 2025, he became aware of how emotionally impactful tree loss was for residents, and felt devastated by the extent of landscape loss following the hurricanes. His research focuses on how community members perceive the emotional and symbolic impacts of losing coastal trees, and how human and landscape relationships shift in the face of environmental disturbance. Through conversations with primarily single family and multi family residential property owners, Indi captures how people develop a sense of place and place identity, experience the loss of important landscape features, and navigate their perception of community in a post disaster context. #mla #landscapearchitecture #designresearch #floridacoast #coastallandscape

COASTAL RESILIENCE FIELD TRIP Our Ecological Restoration class explored Georgia’s coast to study intervention strategies for erosion, sea level rise, and habitat restoration. From historic landscapes to active restoration projects, we examined how designers work with dynamic systems to bring back ecological processes that support both environmental and community resilience. Field-based learning that engages the challenges shaping contemporary practice. Understanding landscapes as living systems we can help restore and sustain. #landscapearchitecture #ugamla #ecologicalrestoration #coastalresilience #designeducation

Congratulations to MLA students Christopher Boyette and Nishad Kute on receiving Spring 2026 Campus Sustainability Grants from @sustainableuga ! Boyette was awarded $4,672 to cost-effectively improve water quality and the hydrologic capacity of highway greenways under the direction of Dr. Jon Calabria. Kute was awarded $5,000 to study the effectiveness of artificial floating islands to enhance water quality and ecological design education under Dr. Zhongzhe Shen. The grants were awarded at Sustainable UGA's Semester in Review on Dec. 3. We're proud of Boyette and Kute's work to advance sustainability!

When recent MLA graduate Megan Janssen, BLA '24, started her freshman year at the College of Environment and Design, she noticed something about her undergraduate cohort. While she entered college as a landscape architecture major, many of her peers did not. Three years later, when it was time to select her topic for her master's thesis, she came back to the question that had been lingering in her mind the past few years: What if more people knew about landscape architecture sooner? Read more about Janssen's research on reaching the next generation of landscape architects in our newsfeed. Link in bio!

MAPPING THE LOW COUNTRY This project by Noah Cleveland (MLA ’26) examines how rising seas and changing salinity gradients may reshape coastal wetlands in the South Carolina Lowcountry. By modeling climate-driven land conversion, Noah explores how these shifts could alter the structure and function of waterfowl habitats over time. Using mapping and spatial analysis, the work visualizes where forested wetlands, tidal marshes, and open water begin to reorganize. The research aims to inform proactive, data-driven approaches to conservation and adaptive management in a changing coastal landscape. #landscapearchitecture #coastalecology #wetlandresearch #lowcountry #climateresiliency #designinquiry
