I used to think I wanted to be a boy. Here’s some words on why I was wrong and how it took a cancer diagnosis to finally understand myself. This isn’t an argument against how anyone else chooses to live their life, this is purely my story about my mind and body finally written down after years of complex thoughts, feelings and others assumptions. I’m not a de-transitioner, I’m simply an autistic lesbian who didn’t fit into the sexist stereotypes men made for us. I thought being uncomfortable with femininity meant I wasn’t a woman. What I didn’t understand is that many women don’t subscribe to outdated stereotypes and living boldly as a masculine, androgynous, tomboy like woman is the most radical thing I can do. Showing other girls there is no set way to be a woman and to embrace your masculinity, your butchness and your creativity in self expression. Knowing deeply that you are woman enough just as you are. The issue I see so much right now is tomboys being medicalised, being told their interests in stereotypically ‘male’ interests or clothing means they are actually boys. I’m here to save the tomboys. The past few years I’ve been pretty ill. Some of you may know, most of you won’t. I’ve spent a lot of time in hospital and during that time I had some realisations about myself. A true dark night of the soul you could say. Anyway I finally took the time to write down my thoughts and alongside some illustrations track my journey of womanhood, internalised misogyny, gender dysphoria, period pain and trauma. I’ve been asked many times over the years about gender identity and my experience etc. To be honest a lot of it was too complex too messy to really articulate. I was also scared. Scared of having a different experience. Scared of the intolerance of the so called tolerant and inclusive. But I’m old now and have been brutally reminded of how short life is. So here it is. A dissection of my thought process over the years. An honest and raw analysis of life through the eyes of an autistic lesbian who thought she had to escape womanhood just to survive the pain of being one.
