It was a privilege for us at M.J Numa & Partners LLP to have been invited to the Olaniwun Ajayi LP-International Centre for Settlement of Investmet Disputes (ICSID) Symposium on Investor-State Dispute Settlement (ISDS), a flagship convening on the theme “ISDS in Sub-Saharan Africa: Looking Ahead”.
The Symposium featured distinguished speakers and panelists including representatives of ICSID, the Attorney General of the Federation, leading industry stakeholders, and respected practitioners in the field of international arbitration and investment law.
The discourse provided valuable insights into the evolving relationship between African states and investor-state dispute settlement mechanisms, the balance between investor protection and sovereign regulatory powers, dispute prevention strategies, and the future of investment arbitration across the continent.
As conversations around investment protection, regulatory certainty, and sustainable development continue to shape Africa’s economic landscape, forums such as this remain critical to advancing thoughtful engagement and legal innovation.
We appreciate the opportunity to be a part of this important conversation.

The Nigeria Tax Reform Acts 2025 are here, and they change everything.
Signed into law in June 2025 and effective from 1 January 2026, the four Acts represent the most far-reaching restructuring of Nigeria’s fiscal framework in decades. But beyond the technical overhaul lies a deeper question, do these reforms modernise our tax system, or do they quietly redraw the lines of Nigeria’s federalism?
Our latest article examines the constitutional tensions between federal and state taxing powers; the new 4% Development Levy and its legal implications; the 15% Minimum Effective Tax Rate and what it means for multinationals; VAT fiscalisation, mandatory e-invoicing, and expanded input VAT recovery; taxation of indirect offshore transfers and, the coming wave of tax litigation.
Whether you are a legal practitioner, in-house counsel, or business owner, understanding these reforms is not optional, it is urgent.

We recently concluded an in-house training on Electoral Reforms and the evolving expectations of legal practitioners in the lead-up to, and aftermath of, the 2027 election cycle. The session was designed to equip our lawyers with a clear and practical understanding of the Electoral Act 2026 and its implications for electoral litigation.
Led by Oluwole Osaze-Uzzi, former Director of Voter Education at the Independent National Electoral Commission and former Attorney General of Edo State, the training provided a rigorous examination of the legislative changes, the policy considerations underpinning them, and the shifting contours of election dispute resolution. Particular attention was given to emerging jurisprudential trends, evidentiary thresholds, and the increasingly technical nature of election petitions.
The session also offered a forward-looking perspective on the responsibilities of legal practitioners within Nigeria’s electoral framework, emphasizing precision in pleadings, disciplined evidentiary presentation, and a nuanced appreciation of the intersection between statutory reforms and constitutional principles.
More than a knowledge session, this engagement reflects our continuing commitment to staying ahead of regulatory developments and ensuring that our clients benefit from advice that is both current and deeply grounded in practice.

We are pleased to announce our successful representation of First Bank Nigeria Limited in a high-stakes and contentious garnishee proceeding in Suit No: FHC/ABJ/CS/2428/2025 – NIMEX Petrochemicals Ltd & Anor v. Conoil Plc before the Federal High Court, Abuja Division.
The matter involved a substantial claim of $8,488,752.88 (Eight Million, Four Hundred and Eighty Eight Thousand, Seven Hundred and Fifty Two Thousand Dollars, Eighty Eight Cents) with significant implications for banking operations and garnishee jurisprudence in Nigeria.
In a decisive ruling, the Court upheld the compelling submissions of our Managing Partner, Michael Jonathan Numa, SAN, affirming that an overdraft facility constitutes a debit position and therefore does not qualify as funds available for garnishment. The Court further reiterated the settled legal principle that garnishee proceedings apply strictly to monies standing to the credit of a judgment debtor, not debit balances.
