I’m not one to write overly sentimental commentary, but yesterday was the anniversary of me taking my late Father to his first @audramcdonald concert and I found the program the other week. Recently, I was able to bring her to Tiny Desk via this latest production of @gypsybway . I find myself sitting in a place of profound gratitude, reflecting on the opportunity and how it was a full circle moment in my life. So carousel the carousel for my random musings.

Today we launch our crowdfunding campaign for The Beauty in Trying (@tbitfilm )! The Beauty in Trying is a visual exploration of dance for healing. Through one woman's story, this short film looks at the importance of art in our lives and how finding an outlet as such helps us heal and grow. Please check out our website and our @seedandspark Campaign (link in bio). We hope that you’ll support this film and donate what you can. Also, please Retweet/Forward/Share with your networks. Thank you! Mitra and The Beauty in Trying Team #womeninfilm #blackwomeninfilm #acreativedc #dance #blackgirlmagic #directher #editing #filmmaking #blackgirlsrock #blackballerina #ballet #womenindance

This gentleman was in the lobby when I went to see #Sinners in IMAX 70mm. Had to snap a pic.

I don’t know that there are words that capture her life, her energy, her joys, her successes, her pains, and her sorrows. What I know is there will never on this Earth be another like Anna Mae Bullock. Rest well Queen Tina. (Tina Turner in concert in Versailles, France, 1990 (Getty Images/HBO)

Seeing it in person was honestly a bit emotional. The barriers she broke, the doors she opened… an incredibly deserved honor. #lenahorne #broadwayblack #broadway #blackgirlmagic

We’re in the last hour or so of #WorldPhotographyDay and I’m sharing this picture I came across of Howard ‘Kingfish’ Franklin Jr, who we lost yesterday. This picture isn’t a great picture. It’s not even good. But it means a lot to me. It makes me think of our shared love of photography and image capturing. So often when I saw Howard, he had a camera in his hand. Snapping away. He took one of my favorite photos of my mother and I. We would often chat about cameras and lens. He’d give me tips. Howard and I had a complicated friendship. I honestly made it more complicated than it needed to be. I asked things of him, wasn’t understanding enough, wasn’t patient enough. I said “Howard, leave me alone,” more than I said “Howard, I love you.” I will forever regret that. Despite my pushing him away, he always greeted me with a smile and a bear hug. I pray that he knew that I loved him. I will miss our talks about jazz or photography or just life. I will miss your big voice and personality. I will miss that little smile you’d get when you knew you’d said something that would make me complain. I will miss the way you showed everyone how much you loved us.
