Last year I decided to take on a year-long project to bring a bit more purpose to my life. I wanted to achieve a few things from this. The main one being, to create a book for my girlfriend to enjoy. I now had an excuse to take my camera with me, wherever we went. I took photos of everything we did together, good, bad & ugly. Everything was shot with black & white film & through the same lens. It was intended to be like this for the purpose of keeping everything simple, stripped back & raw.  I don't like to sugar coat stuff too much & this wasn't intended to be a highlight reel. It's just the reality of what we did over the course of a year. Most of the photos are only important to the people in them, that's why I love it so much. Don't get me wrong, highlighting & celebrating your wins is important. But we also had an amazing year & didn't get married, buy a dog, have a kid, go overseas, get a pay rise or purchase a house. Most of your life isn't going to be this stuff & that's totally fine. Dream come true. Managed to fluke seeing orcas on 3 separate occasions whilst in New Zealand. No tours needed just a helpful local 6 year old girl with good eyesight. On this occasion in Mount Maunganui, we got to see them hunting stingrays in the shallow waters. I’ll upload a longer video later showing this for all my fellow animal nerds.

Looking back at all my latest rolls of film I realised about 1/3 is based around food. I love how something so simple that we do every day, can also be the perfect catalyst to share moments with family & friends. Dine out, take away, picnic at the park or a home cook meal I’m here for it all.

Pleased that people are still asking about certain themes & meanings in this film. The one that comes up the most is this scene in particular. This was maybe the most fun I've had editing a scene. It gave the film that little gear change it needed. Up until this point, I’d kept things slower to show Ryan in a different environment & light. I didn’t want there to be any doubt about who he really is after watching this. Those long, uncut conversations were my way of pulling back the curtain. Showcasing the Ryan most people don’t usually see & putting a line in the sand to end the chatter surrounding him. So when it got to this part of the day & Ryan was fully in his element (the version everyone had been waiting for) I wanted the edit to feel like a homage to his personality, dedication & work ethic: fast, fun & a bit of “wtf am I watching right now.” The lyrics of the song I chose tie in conveniently with his journey (plus they’re also sampled in one of Australia’s most iconic tracks by Hilltop Hoods, which featured Aussie flatland legend Simon O’Brien in the film clip). A nice way to connect OG Australian BMX icons with the new generation.

Last weekend was nothing short of magic/high vibes and everything we could’ve hoped for while shooting on the stunning Minjerribah (Stradbroke Island). We ran through the rain, soaked up the sun, snuck in a few ocean dips, and savoured every moment.
