Haven’t posted in a bit, but I’m definitely feeling motivated in the new year! Been mixing it up and trying some new things. Here are some progress shots of a few pieces that I’m excited about finishing up!
Catacombs
(14 x 21) Conte Crayon/Charcoal
February 2023
I’ve been wanting to draw the catacombs ever since my trip to Paris in 2019. The dark shadows were really inspiring to me. Last July, was talking to @lkyemma about a few ideas I had and decided to give this one a go. At the time I wanted to do the whole piece in one session, but plans quickly changed and I ended up spending around 21 days on it. Working a bit bigger was a nice change of pace, and I was really happy with the result!

Kurt Cobain
(8x10) Charcoal
2014-2019
Started this one when I was finishing up high school and didn’t end up finishing it until 5 years later. Sometimes I get a little intimidated or lose motivation on a piece and stall out for a bit, but it’s always satisfying to finally see it through. Go check this one out at @crescenthillcoffee

“Optimator”
(5x7) charcoal
2022
Finding the time to draw is sometimes difficult for me. A lot of times I’ll put it on the back burner. I have found it’s really important for me to make firm plans to draw and do my best to stick to them if I ever want to finish anything. Although it took a bit longer than all my other pictures from this year, I was really excited about this one through the whole process. I was really inspired watching Noah prep for a hard climb at Optimator this past spring in Indian creek. It was really fun to try and capture that calm and confident attitude that anyone that’s climbed with him has seen!

“Yosemite Valley”
(9 x 12) Watercolor & Micron Pen
2013
One of my early watercolors back in high school. I really found a love of watercolor around that time and it’s definitely a big goal of mine to do more with watercolor in 2023! This one was inspired by my first trip to Yosemite back around 2009. I have limited edition prints of this piece available, dm if interested!

Here’s another one from the sketchbook from around a year ago. I was lucky to spend 2 months staying with @andrewiireland last year working remote in the Bay Area. Something about the city really inspired me and I was able to spend more time doing little sketches than I typically do. This one was a favorite of mine!

Close to 10 years ago I got this book and started using it as a semi travel journal, which makes it super satisfying to look back at different sketches and drawings from over the years. This one is @noah.havlik and @alongurman cooling off in the Merced after a super hot September morning. It’s crazy to think it’s been at year since then!
“L&N Baxter Station”
(9 x 12) Watercolor
2014
Back in 2014 @blake_merkley and I were wandering around Louisville and came across this spot. This was one of my first more involved watercolor paintings, but still remains one of my very favorites.
“Castleton”
(5x7) watercolor
Winter 2019
Growing up I spent a ton of time drawing. I didn’t really find painting until high school. By that time I had realized that I was a pretty slow painter. During college I was so busy with school and spending most of my free time going climbing that I really fell out of habit of making time for art. Once I started up again, I wanted to try to be more efficient, so I got really interested in doing smaller paintings that wouldn’t be as committing. Castleton was so visually striking and inspiring to me that it really brought back a lot of stoke for painting

Dawn in El Cap Meadow
Watercolor
2021
On my first day in Yosemite last fall I had plans to ride in with Noah and Alon because they had a permit to get into the park. They had plans to get up early to try to climb the free blast before the sun hit the wall. All this to say, I found myself alone in Noah’s van parked at the base of el cap around 4:30 in the morning unable to sleep. I got the urge to get up and go sit in the meadow. I hadn’t ever really painted anything in person, but felt like bringing the watercolors and trying to paint el cap as the sun was coming up…ultimately I felt alright about how the picture turned out, but I’ll probably never forget the feeling I had painting it sitting totally alone in the meadow listening to some Sam Cooke as the sun came up.
