In the Signal Kinetics Lab, a PhD is not given—it is earned through valor. With a shield forged by my comrades and courage in my heart, I faced the final trial: The Sword of the Advisor. I emerged victorious.
We don’t do normal defenses here. You pass the oral… and then survive the sheild battle.
Huge thanks to my advisor, @fadeladib , for wielding the (fake) sword, and to my labmates @mit_sk_lab for crafting the world’s coolest graduation armor. This journey has been the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. Grateful to my incredible advisor, my resilient lab, my friends, and everyone who supported me along the way.

In my lab, completing a PhD involves not just an oral defense but also a physical defense—against me, their advisor! 🤺 Graduating students receive a dedicated shield 🛡️ thoughtfully designed and built by the entire lab team
I'm incredibly proud of my brilliant PhD student, Saad, whose groundbreaking research was published in prestigious international venues, featured by over 100 media outlets—including BBC and National Geographic—and recognized with numerous high-profile national and international awards 🏆
Throughout his PhD journey, Saad took on extraordinarily ambitious projects. His brilliance, contagious optimism, and resilience led to world-class findings that will undoubtedly stand the test of time. It's been an honor and a joy to be Saad’s advisor!
Following his successful oral defense, Saad passed the physical defense with flying colors—earning his well-deserved knighthood 🗡️ These photos offer a glimpse into his epic physical defense, shield battle, and knighting ceremony. Congratulations, Dr. Saad!
Excited to share a new project we have been working on: Drones that can fly in the dark. This new drone system, MiFly, uses wireless signals to track itself as it flies!
Traditional drones use GPS outdoors or vision indoors, but these systems fail indoors in dark or low visibility settings. Our new system can track itself even in these challenging settings.
This new line of work in our lab has many exciting applications across warehousing, automation, and drone delivery. We are excited to continue pushing the boundaries of drone technology!
For more information, check out our paper, which will appear in IEEE International Conference on Computer Communications (INFOCOM’ 25)
