I was very scared that it would feel empty, cheapened by the merciless hunting we are witnessing every day as ICE rips people from their communities, their families and dreams. Happily, I was wrong. We were greeted by over 30 federal workers this morning who, despite having gone 43 days without pay, chose to show up with warmth and enthusiasm to welcome their fellow citizens. Their inviting smiles moved me even more than the pledge I have been practicing for 4 decades. It’s easy to feel cynical at this moment, to only see the bad and the cruel. It helps me to remember that I only made it to today because of the Americans around me, many of them strangers, who stopped to help. I intend to do the same with my hard-won citizenship. 🇺🇸🗽♥️
Opening my photo app this morning to find pictures of @rafaelaecheverri for her birthday, I was surprised that mixed in were a few pictures of me. I have the same feeling when my parents confuse us in the first second of a phone call; how Benicio rests his head on her shoulder; the way Jacob seeks her judgement. It’s pride, but more than that it’s thrill, the chance—even in confusion, even for a moment—to try on her nature and her speeds. Rafa, you have the wisdom to see everyone’s truth, and the grace to still meet them where they are. To be more like you is what I will strive for every single day of my life. Happiest birthday you treasure; I’m the luckiest sister of all time.
