At her funeral, one of her best friends at the church where she worked at told me how she used to lock herself in a closet and yell out a hymn at the top her of lungs. Her best friend would ask her why, she’d say “I want to sound just like my nephew!”
A part of me cackles, knowing how on brand that is for her, and part of me tears up because I know I won’t be ever able to joke with her about it.
Sometimes the singer thing gets in the way of life and for the better part of a decade it has been hard being so far from my big and tight knit family. I guess I’m writing this for the part of me that wishes he wasn’t so far from them right now.
My Auntie Easter loved to cook. She was the life of the party. She was always the first to greet you on your birthday because she never forgot. She was also born on Easter, hence her name. Happy birthday

This past Monday, our team took a little hike out Cobbler’s Path to film a digital short for a new piece written for tenor Mishael Eusebio.
The piece, composed by Jennifer Higdon with a libretto by Mado Christie, is part of our initiative to have our Emerging Artists collaborate with composers and librettists on new work created for them. Stay tuned for the video release in October.
