Shakespeare Day! Shakespeare Day is celebrated annually on 23rd April to mark the birth and death of William Shakespeare. Shakespeare almost certainly enjoyed, and was knowledgeable about, gardening. His plays and sonnets are steeped in botanical imagery and include references to over 50 different types of flowers including garden plants, wild flowers and herbs. Check out @shakespearebtrust website for more details. #shakespeare #shakespearequotes

An idyllic spring scene with some of our new lambs enjoying the sunshine. If you see some lambs on your walks around the Estate, please do enjoy watching them as I did yesterday, but please give them a wide berth and keep dogs on leads. #miserden #miserdenestate #springlambs #nzromneyewes

Gardening Tip for April from Alexander McCallum, Head Gardener at Miserden Estate. This week we have taken advantage of the lovely sunshine and started scarifying the lawns here at Miserden. April is a great time to start on your lawns and give them some TLC. A couple of ways to help any lawn can be to apply a fertilizer either in a granulated or a liquid form or to use a scarifier. Remember putting in the hard work now on those lawns makes for a better lawn in the summer. Removal of moss, thatch and weeds makes way for the grass to get that essential airflow to reach the soil and roots, allowing better nutrients with water reaching the soil. All this space will encourage and create new grass giving you that healthy lawn. Trust me it's worth the work. #miserden #thegardenatmiserden #miserdengarden #lawncare #gardeningtips

Garden wildlife jobs for April. It isn't just the plants and flowers that are waking up from their winter slumber. Most garden wildlife is also getting busy in April and it is a good idea to bear them in mind when out in the garden this month. We know that caterpillars bring their own problems but they are an essential food source for nesting birds. Try to avoid removing them from plants where possible. Talking of birds, remember to top up the bird feeders and continue to leave out water and meat based dog or cat food for hedgehogs. They like chicken flavour apparently! Any hibernating wildlife should have left your compost bin by now but do keep checking as you empty your bin just in case frogs or hedgehogs are sheltering in there. Insects and bees can always make use of insect 'hotels' which can be made using old tin cans, tiles, bricks, hollow stems and drilled logs. Anything that creates plenty of nooks and crannies that insects can crawl into. Lastly, think about your planting. Pockets of wildflowers will reward you with a hit of beautiful colours whilst increasing the availability of pollen and nectar for insects. Creating Spaces 2026! A little taster into what is in store at this year's Creating Spaces exhibition installed and curated by members of @cotswold_sculptors_association . The exhibition is a highlight of the Miserden calendar. Seeing the artworks nestled in amongst the plants and trees brings a sense of wonder and magic to the Garden as visitors discover the sculptures by following the trail. This year we are delighted to announce the return of the popular indoor exhibition at the Miserden Club Room. Offering an opportunity to view the sculptures up close, visitors can discover smaller works, specifically designed for interiors. Creating Spaces opens on 3rd June and runs until 2nd August and over the coming months we will feature works by the artists. We can't wait to welcome the artists back to Miserden.
