The installation is on view at
@kaleidoscope.bk until October 19th.
The work is a site-specific performance, consisting of a dancer, a musician, a magnetic field generator, a magnetic field detector and a synthesizer, to be performed in a graveyard. The magnetic field generator creates alternating magnetic fields centered at the ground in a circle approximately 15m in diameter. These magnetic fields induce the ground to produce its own magnetic fields, slightly out of phase with the magnetic fields from the generator. The dancer (
@competitive.solitaire ) moves in this area of magnetic activity, wearing a magnetic field detector. As they move, the detector reads the disturbances in the magnetic field caused by the bodies in the ground. The signal from the detector travels by wire to a synthesizer just outside the area of magnetic activity, and a sound artist (
@tt__britt ) uses the synthesizer to make music. The music is played back to the dancer, who begins responding to it. In this way when the dancer moves the dead make music, and when the dead make music the dancer moves, manifesting a world of invisible influence and setting it equal to the influence of the living. - Mischa
The exhibition consists of a four channel video installation of a performance recorded in a Brooklyn cemetery in July 2024, alongside the physical components of the machine used in the performance. Additionally, the work is performed live in the space, once for the show opening on September 22nd, and once for the closing night on October 19th.
